View Full Version : worst wheelin weekend (kinda long)

the whole weekend has pretty much just majorily blown. Saturday i went over to a freind's shop to change my rear seal that seemed to be leaking a good amount of oil, and reinstall my fixed front driveshaft that tore up its CV last weekend. I decided to go ahead and put a new high volume oil pump in while i had the pan off to do the seal.

After many hours of laying under bronco and getting oil dripped on me from the crank i got it all back together and fired it up and had good oil pressure but still a few drips of oil which i thought might just be residual from the seal being out no biggie. Went ahead and got the truck all ready to go wheeling.

Next mourning our club packs up and heads to our local wheeling area which is about 10 miles south of town. the bronco ran great but it seemed like the automatic tranny was grabbing like it should, i kinda ignored it. we stopped at a wide open area in the trees and my buddies said i was dripping oil pretty badly still. so i investigate some more and discover that the rear gasket on the intake never did seal up right and was pushing out letting oil run down the back of the motor looking like the rear seal was leaking. So i was thrilled to find out i did all of that work for nothing and would now have to take the intake off and seal it up the way it should have been to begin with. I also take this in stride and call a freind that was still on the way and tell him to grab some oil so i can still wheel most of the day.

So i take off down the trail and i hear a clunk under the back and then something flies off in the grass. I stop and get out and go look and my rear driveshaft is laying beside the rode. Most of the CV joint still hanging from the transfer case and the slip yoke still on the pinion. So i unbolt the left over peices and of course don't quite have enough peices to repair it. so i lock in my hubs and drive tt our usual gathering area where the other members leave thier trailers and such. I ending up riding along with one of my freinds for the rest of the day.

later on when i go to drive it home in front wheel drive i take off and it seems like the motor is revving unusually high to get me going. I got a little ways down the road back home, taking it easy because my front is not set up for speed, and the tranny starts slipping all together so that i cannot drive and had to get a tow back our shop. i haven't seen a single leak but there is now no oil on the tranny dipstick:banghead

So i left it parked and went home, i am gonna see what i can do about it tomorrow i was too pissed off at that point to even work on it. Not to mention the mt dew i grabbed in a hurry from the cooler at the gas station on the way out of town to go wheeling turned out to be diet when i went to drink it. I hate the taste of diet pop so that was just icing on the fricken cake all day having to taste that shit.

Sorry for the long read and if anything is screwed up in the writing of it i don't care cause i typed it real fast.

Man, It happens to everyone. I've screwed up diagnosing parts since I bought the thing, and spent a couple hours each time re-doing my work after I fixed it to make it work right. Like my oil pan gasket. :whiteflag

At least you blew out your CV on a trail. I dropped my rear U-joint in the school parking lot when I spun on some sand, and grabbed ashpalt in front of half the school! and I didn't have a front driveshaft to get home with. :twak

I'd say it's all part of owning and working on your own chit, but that's cliche. So I'll say "Stop drinking Mountain Dew, it tastes like crap, diet or not."

Sorry to hear about your weekend. I've got to say, I know what that's like. Hey, Sorry but I have to ask, does this mean we're not going to see a pic of the tires on the bronco? As long as you didn't burn up the tranny, try adding fluid and it might still shift. At least long enough for you to get a replacement.:rockon

An ounce of maintenance is worth a pound of BFH.

Good news though, the tranny will probably be ok if you just add some fluid and fix the leak.

OK, small update. What i have discovered so far is this, the CV i mentioned that came apart on me last weekend had hit the tranny pan hard enough to shift it and make the seal leak very badly. Normally a person would notice this but it was masked by the oil i though was coming from my rear seal but was actaully coming from my intake. so the leak in my tranny went unnoticed until i lost all the fluid.

I tried adding a gallon to get it to move around and the leak had become worse and the gallon was soon all over my driveway. So i am going to install a new tranny pan and seal to fix this, also take off my intake and seal it back up. And then hopefully i will have some money around to buy a new 1350 CV set-up for the rear. Once all that is back in order the 39.5's will go on and it is party time.

i would recommend adding one or two of the lucus additive into the tranny, i know some say not to waste your money, but i put some in the crown vic my parents gave me, wasn't shifting good at all, had 230k on it, and i put that in it, and shifted much better. just a thought, i know how bad it feels to have so many troubles with your truck, i mean one is enough, but when they pile on like that, hard to keep it cool. keep us updated on how the repairs go

boy i heard that if u put lucas in a tranny it'll mess ur seals up and thats gonna require a tranny rebuild. While u're in the tranny change the filter and drain the torque converter. just go ahead and do a tranny service.-:thumbup

Ya it is still sitting in the driveway, below zero out now so not sure if i even want to fix it, but my new tranny pan with drain plug comes friday. Already have the new filter and that shit. Waiting for a price quote from high angle driveline on the transfer case flange, 1350 CV shaft and 1410 differential yoke.

I am thinking about using one of my truck tarps from the top of the garage door and over top the bronco. Put some heavy shit over the edges and put the nibco heater underneath so that i can stay warm enough to work on it and for the RTV to set up. would be easier if my garage was big enough to fit a car in. Our club is supposed to go wheeling this weekend but we'll see if i get enough ambition to fix it.

new update for anyone who is even midly interested.

got it into my freinds shop after 2 hours of using a handyman jack as a winch to get it loaded on a trailer in below zero weather. got the tranny pan fixed, and the rear driveshaft i have tempted up with another stock bronco shaft, got my 39.5 TSL's on it.

My newest problem came when i tried to pull my nice edelbrock intake to fix the gasket leak in the rear and it cracked on me. So now a few more hundred dollars down the drain. and when i mounted up my tires i found out one of my ball joints on the dana 60 is completely shot.

If this wasn't my only real hobby that thing would have been on the auction block today.
