I just picked up a 78 Bronco and it needs somethings done to it. I'm good with strictly mechanical take crap off and replace type things, but I have a carb issue or vacuum leak going on that makes it pretty much impossible to take this thing anywhere.

Anyone know their way around the 351 that wouldn't mide giving me a hand? Beer and food provided (obviously). No garage here, so we'll have to pick a day when it's warm out... And bring your step stool

Let me get it running well enough to move drive it, and I'll try and get in touch. I really appreciate the offer.:thumbup

I guess I could actually explain the issue I'm having, huh?

Usually will start up fine, and take 3-4 minutes of gas to get it to idle. Then it idles alright. The guy that had it before was having trouble keeping it running, and set the idle to 1200.

Now, drop it in D,R,1,2 and it will die without revving the engine. Get it in D and drive, no problems. Drives really well actually. Come to a stop in D or R and it dies again. On the 2 hour drive home I only had to stop a couple times, so I dropped it in N at the stoplights, and everything was fine.

At some point during the drive home it spit the breather tube out of the top of the valve cover, when I went to replace it the rubber gasket fell into the valve cover. Once I get the valve cover off and replace the breather, I will get it running again.

So there it is.

hey zog I'm here in new kent I'd give you a hand but it sounds like the power valve in your carb may be shot. I have some friends that used to be into racing and I will explain the problem to them and see what they think, but I do know if you have a holley 4-bbl. and it backfires through the carb it can blow the power valve then it don't run right worth a durn.
let me know if you need some help like i said i live in new kent and work in chesterfield so i'm all over.

Well supposedly, it's a newly reman'd carb. I believe it's the OEM kind though. Thanks for the offers to help. When I can nail down a good day to get to work on this I'll let you guys know...

Well life has thrown me quite a few curveballs since the original posting of this thread, but I still have the bronco, and she's still doing the same ol stuff. BUT, it's getting warmer outside, which means it will be nice enough to work outside soon enough.

We should all get together and drink a beer, if nothing else.......

Sounds like you just need a carb rebuild or swap. Is it a Holley carb?

Before you replace the carb, check carefully for a major vacuum leak.
