View Full Version : Colorado wheelin'
Shadofax 01-06-2007, 04:28 AM So I pulled out my old"The best of Colorado 4-wheel drive roads", I was kinda focused on stuff not too far away, so was looking at Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forests. Anyone have familiarity with the following trails:
Green Ridge
Kelly Flats
Flowers Road
Mulstay
Pierson Peak
Kingston Peak
or bill Moore Lake?
If you don't recognize names, fine, it's possible they have changed, and I can give you further info.
fishinnutt 01-06-2007, 01:52 PM I know of Kelly Flats for sure. It has a nice initial hill climb.
Broncobob 01-06-2007, 06:03 PM kingston peak has some absolutely amazing views. Fine for a stocker. Lots of little areas to explore.

views good! :thumbup
I'm not overly worried if a stocker will get there.;)

Well, this time of year, you def. need something better than a stocker.:histerica

yep, and more to come, think they are calling for it late wed. or thurs. I think I'll be flying in at the end of the month....we've found our lot and model of home so I wanna come and see. Wish I could bring the bronco and play in the snow, but that will be late april.
RicardoJM 01-07-2007, 11:08 PM No worries, at the rate it is not melting and continuing to fall each week - there will be plenty of snow in April.

So, are you here now or visiting again?
Here's a site that gives road status in Roosevelt. It's normally up to date, but I know for a fact that what's on there now is wrong, call to be sure.

Pretty much everything is closed until after spring run off now. Kelly Flats, Flowers, and Green Ridge are definitely closed, I suspect Pierson is as well. Sevenmile is a great snow trail and stays open until it gets muddy in the spring, then they close it until things dry up again. I'm hoping to put together a trip up there in February. It's a lot of fun with a foot or three of snow over 12 inches of ice :toothless Ballard Logging Road is also open all year (no gate at all). It can be fun for snow bashing. Another great road for snow bashing is Crown Point which doesn't show up as a 4x4 trail, it's a regular gravel road in Roosevelt that tops out just under 11,000 feet and overlooks the upper Poudre Canyon.
Shadofax 01-08-2007, 10:20 PM Still in Oregon, I'm booking a flight to be there Jan. 26-30 for the home lookey and hopefully contract. Then I won't be back again until late april when I physically move.
another trail that is open year long is Yankee hill. It is in the same area of kinston peak. I would NOT try kinston peak in the snow. The Apex side is a shelf road. So in the snow it's not a good idea. Yankee is a easy trail when dry. but add snow and it just becomes fun.

To make this thread a little more fun, anyone have any links or pics of the trails we are talking about?
Larston 01-11-2007, 10:07 PM Kelly Flats
I don't have a lot of pictures of Kelly Flats except in the Chutes. It's about 100 feet of level 3+ to 4 obstacle with a graded gravel bypass. The other big obstacle is Heart Attack Hill which I've never been up or down. The road around the mountain is a lot more fun than the road over it in this case :toothless

Larston 01-11-2007, 10:11 PM This is the only picture I have of Green Ridge. This was the day it swallowed my stock Bronco and started 8 years of buildups. These mud pits are closed now. The trail is essentially flat for about 17 miles with a few rock gardens thrown in.

It's hard to resist posting pics of a bunch of the Larimer County trails. There are some fun ones up here, they're just not much of a challenge :toothless

That's fine though Larry. Really I don't want to beat the crap out of my truck, I'm looking for some mild to moderate stuff with lots of views. Plus, we have a long-term laugh here about me and my ex wife...she left right after a wheeling trip where I got kinda scary close to rolling the truck over frontways if you can believe that. So with my Fiance I certainly don't want to scare her away, and she's not real big on the outdoors stuff as it is.
jackhart 01-12-2007, 02:35 PM So I pulled out my old"The best of Colorado 4-wheel drive roads",

"Trail No. 1" : nearest back alleys from greenwich village to the empire state building....:cry :duh :doh0715: :uke:
poopy_pants 01-15-2007, 07:28 PM Kelly Flats is a nice trail right into Poudre Canyon.
Pierson Park also allows a run into Johnny Park, if you do Pierson I suggest Johnny as well. Perfect for a stock Bronco, mine did fine on 235 tires.
renopowers 02-22-2007, 12:39 PM This is Trail Ridge Road. It’s not challenging at all. Stock Jeep Liberty went on this trip. Great views though. http://www.renopowers.com/gallery/4x4_trailridge_index.php
This is a trail called Holy Cross. It’s not really that close, but it’s a cool trail. Wouldn’t take a stocker out there.

I’ve got some pictures of Crystal Mountain, which is close to the other trails you were talking about, but I don’t have them up. I’ll try to get on that this weekend.

Can't get the links to work?:shrug
renopowers 02-23-2007, 07:50 PM What do you get? I can pull them up from these links and I can get to the main section of my site so I think my sites up.
You can get there by going to www.renopowers.com too. Just hit the gallery link and the 4x4 stuff is under Wild Yakk off-road. I did notice that some of the images arn't linking to the right pictures but most of them are.

Larston 02-24-2007, 07:06 PM Trail Ridge is a paved road, wonder what the picture is actually showing. Probably Fall River road, which is graded gravel.
