I could offer some assistance. Let me know about when you are wanting to work on it. I am in process of building mine also.

I just need to get the metal. What supplier did you use for yours?

Cool, They have huge scrap yard or you can buy new. Let me know when you want to do the bumper build and we can see about hooking up.

Will do. I'm going to use a 4x4 tapered at the ends, either 3/16 or 1/4 thick depending on what they have. What thickness would you recommend for the sections that bolt to the frame? I was thinking 1/4 would do...

When I was building mine, I used 1 inch tube steel to make a frame, I made it 6 inches across, and 8 inches down. I was going to put 1/4 inch plate steel over the top but I wound up ripping it off before I was finished.

Hmmm, got any pics?

I'm thinking it might be easier to start with a 4x4 and just weld on brackets, etc...

The 4x4 would be ok but... measure your frame I think that it is around 6" at least on my 78 at this the height. Maybe 3x6 tapered on the ends? As for brackets 1/4 would work just fine i think. I would go 3/16 on the thickness of the box steel. For mine i went with 1" brackets but they punch through the bumper and have holes for shackles. I still have a ways to go on mine. I was going to work on it this weekend but the weather is not going to cooperate.

So are you saying since the bumper sits higher then the frame a 3x6 beam would work better then a 4x4? I just prefer the look of a square over a rectangle for the bumper, but if it's a lot easier, maybe.

I was also planning on having the brackets punch through for the shackles, but use 1/4 plate then weld on 2 layers of plate for where the shackle mounts. Is that feasible or should I just use 3/4 all the way to the frame?

I just think that if you go with 4" high material it would look odd because you will have frame showing. If you mount it low then you will have a big gap from the tailgate down to the bumper and if you mount it flush with the top you would have frame showing on the bottom.

I think since I'm doing the rear bumper the design is so simple just modifying a 4x4 or a 3x6 tube would be a lot easier and just as strong. That's a great idea for the front though, thanks.

I'd go with something that more of a rectangular shape, like the 6x3 you mentioned. That way you could fab a rear tire carrier to it.

Also remember mine wasnt finished. Was gonna put 1/4 plate metal over the top. These pics show a little bit more of the almost completed work. We were about to start adding the plate metal. This is why I dont have mine now.

Thanks, OO YEAH it came apart all right...It wasnt supposed to though. My buddy yanked, I moved about 2 inches, and off the bumper flew.

Talking to my friend who welded it (he was pretty upset at the time because it came apart), and I didnt know this but he hadnt run a full bead, only tacked it in spots just to line everything up. He was going to weld it solid later. It looked mean in its prime, but alas I went back to the stock bumper....:smash
