Please discuss or reply in this thread (http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86134).
Just a heads up, sometime this weekend, possibly next weekend I will shut FSB down and transfer the site to a new server. The site could be down from 4-8 hours, up to a day or two, depending upon any bumps in the road, extended downtime is not likely but please be prepared for it, the site and its database are fairly large and it will take awhile to do it right.
Sorry for the lack of details but when and how I move it depend on a number of things and could happen at any time, I will give as much notice as possible.
Why is this happening? for a couple of reasons. The recent hacking has possibly left our current server vunerable, not likely due to security measures, but possible none the less. Also, almost 2 years ago when we moved to this server I didnt anticipate the the growth we have had, our 80GB main disk is at about 35%, still plenty of room, but for only so long. AND the main reason is the potential problems we could experience with the current server host. They are located in Australia, the server itself is in Texas and our support dept is in India. If something happened hardware related, like a dead main drive, it could take awhile before it is resolved. The server company I am moving us to is all enclusive, the company, the server itself and the support is located near LasVegas, Nevada, if something dies on the server, they walk into the next room and replace it.
What does this mean? hoepfully less problems than we have had recently with errors, downtimes, slow loading, etc etc, the server we will move to is double the power, if not more, double the bandwidth, i am expecting, double the service
What does THAT mean to FSB? our server cost will go up, but i am a firm believer in you get "what you pay for" . Our current hosting bill is in the neighborhood of 175.00 PER MONTH , our new hosting bill will be around 250.00 PER MONTH. In 2006 it cost us $3400.00 to pay for FSB, including server cost, server administration, domain fees, software fees, upgrades, security work, etc, next year will be even more, I'm just asking for you to keep this in mind, a large database driven website like FSB costs alot to maintain and is kept up with member upgrades and donations, and we thank each of you for keeping it going.
Thanks in advance for the patience and understanding, once we are on the new server it will take a week or two of tweaking it so that it runs fast and effecient, so please allow for some time to work through any problems.
Thanks,
Joe
