This one's for both the noobs, and the experienced members here.
Recently, I bought a D44 front from Ralphenstein. I'm in Oklahoma, He's in Nof Cackalacky. Obviously, UPS and FedEX ain't gonna ship it without tacking on surcharges, so I went with a company with experience, and runs nationwide. R&L Carriers ( http://www.gorlc.com ) had the easiest set up I've seen. Ralphenstein said it was a little frustrating on his end, but that was likely due to my screwups with the paperwork and scheduling. I originally got a quote for $148 to ship the axle from his house ($30 residential pickup fee) to the RLC Terminal in Oklahoma City.
During the process of setting all this up, I learned alot about shipping. Enough to feel I can do this again with fewer errors and much more confidence. First, you can get an online quote, but it's just less hassle to call your local terminal (http://www.gorlc.com/kp_service_maps.asp) and talk to the area rep. He/she can give you a much more detailed quote and be a big help if you've never done it before. Also, if you have a business or you buy alot of large items that require truck shipment, the local rep can help you set up an account and get you cheaper rates. Editor's note: If you bought it and are arranging the shipment and pickup, YOU are the CONSIGNEE, and the person you bought it from is the SHIPPER.
WHen the pickup was finally scheduled, the Charlotte terminal dispatcher called Ralphy and touched base with him, and then they called me to let me know that they got a hold of him and that the pickup had been arranged and that it was on the day's schedule. Once the axle left Charlotte, they called me and told me when it should be in OKC. The next call (2 days later) I got was from the OKC terminal to let me know it arrived. I then made arrangements to pick it up from there (it's also a $30 residential delivery charge), which for me being in the military, was difficult. The terminals are open 24 hours, 5 days a week, closed on saturdays and sundays. They start shutting down between 10-10:30 PM. ( I was able to pick up my axle after driving/hauling ass for 2 1/2 hours to Enid, OK, picking up my F-250, fueling it up, and driving for another hour to OKC. I got there at 10:15 PM Friday night!) They only take cash or certified or company checks. No Visa/MC.
What did I end up paying for the shipment? A whopping $106. You pay, they load it, you haul ass. Bottom line, R&L Carriers can handle anything you need shipped, for a lot less than you think. Their drivers are courteous, and they keep you informed. I plan to use them whenever I need something large transported.
