I hate to say it, but my monster is up for sale. I hurt my back a couple months ago and after surgery and consultation with my doctor I've decided it's best to eliminate temptation and cut 'er loose. The ad is in the for sale section. I'm not getting out of wheeling, though. I've got a killer CJ5 going together, it just won't be for the big stuff :toothless

If the whole truck doesn't sell in the next couple months, I'll be parting it out. Let me know if you're interested in any of it.

Sorry to hear you have to sell it.

If you need/want help tearing it down if it doesn't sell I'll be willing to just to get more experience.

I wish. After taking out two vertebrae and a disk, I just can't get around the extreme trails on foot anymore. Need to stay on the bunny trails :cry

Not being able to walk around just means you gotta build a better rig so you dont get stuck :thumbup

I would offer you something in a second Larston...

But your truck would kill me!:toothless

My rock crawling skill is almost non-existant, so it's a High performance truck, Low performance driver kind of thing.:cry

Put a Bronco body back on the beast and try wheeling the kiddy stuff without getting body damage :goodfinge

Damn! Sorry to here about your back dude. There's still much to be had in wheeling the easy stuff to get off the beaten path, beautiful country and camping. Goood luck with your back, the sale of the rig and your future Jeep endevors!

No serious bites yet, so Stubig ain't dead so far. Oh well, not sure I want to go through the hassle of parting it out either, then trying to find a trucking company to ship parts. Worse comes to worse, I'll throw the Ranger cab on, detune it a bit so the better half can get in and out of it easier, and pretend it's a light trail truck :toothless

Where is your ad for your truck? I looked in the for sale forum in a couple of places and could not locate the particulars.

sorry to hear about the back Larry.

You can count me in on the bunny trails as well. Just not into the major wheeling-major carnage. The scenary and the camping/eating/drinking and some fun trails to get there.

Just run it on the easy trails...

Instead of building the Jeep, you could slowly unbuild the Tronco and make it pretty again. Just a thought...

We're hoping to get out quite a bit this year on some of the old forest roads, and hoping to hit some ghost towns around South Park and Leadville. Could be a good year to hook up with some of the FSB crowd :thumbup

I'm getting itchy to do a nice easy run.

Sounds good guys. I'm on the countdown, if the weather is decent I'll be pulling into Erie Friday, April 19. Be passing by ft. collins around 4pm that day headed south.

The ghost town stuff is exactly what I was thinking. last time was back in 1999, my truck kept having trouble though at the time....turned out the altitude and a fuel pump going bad was the issue. The scenary and quiet (for the destinations a little more remote) is awesome, I love that.:chili:

Edit: oh and a little ribbin' for Larry.....you have a bad back and you want to do a jeep project? a CJ5 at that? I'm sure you're aware how bad they ride, or maybe you'll tow it? I was glad to be done with my YJ. Fun little jeep, but too little, and the ride was aweful.

Late April is nice, will give me a chance to fix a few things that I'd feel better wheeling with.

It kinda funny. I've had the CJ out three times since the injury (not since the surgery) and it was actually pretty comfortable once I figured out how to run the gas without cramping my foot. I can't explain it, just funny that way.

No matter which vehicle ultimately comes out on top, we do plan to tow for longer trips. Like the Bronco, the Jeep is pretty good for 50 to 75 miles one way trips into the mountains, but it'll be tedious past that.

Oh, before I forget, :goodfinge

Unfortunately, that's about the time most of the trails are closed. I bet there's enough snow around that most trails won't open until the end of May :cry

heheh, I'm actually looking forward to the 1200 mile trip with the bronco. Mine still rides pretty nice. Would still be awesome if it weren't for the tire imbalance. Not bad at all, but it has a little.

Even better, I have to replace the seals in the TTB, and do a lot of other minor stuff.

Well if you don't sell it, i would be interested in watching/helping the parting out to learn something and buying some parts, that sucks that you gotta do that, I just got one question are you shorter now that your missing two vertebrae? :shrug

Nah, no shorter. They just had to repair some really old damage as well as a ruptured disk, so the doc only removed pieces of parts :toothless

Nothing but stock pics with the new Supertop. It's still pretty small, 3.73 gears and 31's, 6 cyl and three speed.

Did you say this was a new acquisition? Would be fun to plan a trip this summer. As you know I'm not hardcore, don't care what vehicles I wheel with (brand loyalty stuff), just looking for someone that will know the trails we head out on. So don't forget us bronco 4x4 buds for trail rides when planning! These days I'm so much more into fun/semi challenging trail, fantastic scenery, great people, great food/drink at camp.

We're planning to get out as much as possible this summer once the trails open up. I'm building the Jeep for light to moderate trails, so I'll be looking for the same stuff you are. There are lots of trails here, just have to get the snow off of them :banghead

your thinking and your actions are conflicting .. they don't seem to register in my puny brain

You screwed your back .. you are NOT getting out of wheeling

You have an incredibly CAPABLE rig that will get you through your bunny trails without you having to get out, winch, push/pull or whatever .. yet you are going to go ahead and spend money as well as back pain building ANOTHER rig that is apparently NOT as capable????:wacko

This makes no sense to me .. why don't you put some plush cvaddy seats in what you have and not worry about getting stuck? .. just drive DIFFERENT TRAILS??!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :twak :doh0715:

I'm in for some light to moderate May wheelin around CO. I havent got a chance to try any trails in CO yet, and I've been here for almost 9 months.
Let me know! Brian

Several reasons, actually. With the smaller rig, less temptation to be stupid. My wife won't ride in the Bronco any more, she loves the Jeep. The Bronco no longer has room to carry camp stuff (yes, the Jeep has more room.) The trails we used to run all the time are super narrow. The Jeep fits them a lot better and is more maneuverable. The Bronco weighs a TON. I can get the same capability in a lighter rig that I can drive everywhere anytime I want. The Bronco has gotten ultra expensive to build and maintain. For example, the wheels and tires now are close to $750 a corner, plus a spare. Everything for the axles costs 50% to 100% more than D30 and D44 parts. I have to drive 400+ miles to find challenging trails (besides Indy, but ya gotta have variety.) The Brono won't work for high altitude trails with tons of switchbacks, not a good enough turning radius.

What it basically boils down to is that I've built a rig capable of running the most extreme trails in the country, but is no longer suited to running the stuff an hour from my house. I've done the extreme stuff and learned a lot about what it takes to run hard trails. I want something with that capability, but targeted towards running the hundreds of miles of fire roads I can hit any weekend I want.

No, I'm NOT getting out of wheeling, never said I was. I am going to a smaller rig that will still run all the trails I've enjoyed for years, and will still be reliable enough to get me to the mountains and home again with no worries, as well as around town for pizza and beer afterwards. The Bronco has been a great journey, but it's time to start down a new road. The back injury has forced me to think about this a lot faster than I had planned.

Plus, as far as back injury and "buiding a rig" goes, how much is really involved with building a jeep for light to moderate trails? enough lift to fit a 33" and a pair of ARB lockers and some gears and you're done.

what you describe with your rig Larry is interesting...I remember when I did the sas people were always talking about why not just get a 60 front, and why did you choose the 60 rear, "sooner or later you know you're going to be wanting it for the bigger tires". I built my rig for what I use it for, and what I thought I'd be using it for in the future......moderate trails, camping, some towing/hauling, and daily around town. What I have fits what I wanted to a T, nothing more will be done except small projects. It will never be turned into a truggy, and will never see trails requiring such a rig. and really these days, I just am more interested in the trail ride, scenary, camping and light fun wheeling, certainly nothing hardcore except the fun part. Did I really need the SAS for this, likely not, but I never wanted a bronco with TTB in the first place. So I certainly understand what you ended up with, and your desire to move to something more suitable to you now.
