View Full Version : Alien landin' markers???
adrianspeeder 04-03-2007, 09:25 PM These popped up on the roads near the house yesterday. All are actually pointing different directions. Areal survey markers maybe? Saw one comin' home and when I was turnin' around down the road to take a look saw the second one. 10mins of drivin' around the local roads found the third one.

93Beast 04-03-2007, 09:28 PM ummm hmm thats weird
Hopper 04-03-2007, 09:38 PM They are going to work on the pavement there I bet. At least that's what they do around here...
fordfan 04-03-2007, 10:28 PM I always thought they were boundary markers for taking pictures from the sky. IDK
JD_Bronco 04-03-2007, 10:51 PM uhh, Adrian, if i knew that you lived over there i would have said hi. That was me with some spray paint.
j/k
El Kabong 04-03-2007, 11:09 PM I've heard of markers painted on the ground at specific intervals for police helicopters to be able to time cars & know if they are speeding. Don't know if anybody really does that or if it's just an old wives tail.
They look wider than normal paint marks around here indicating trees to be removed, curbs to be replaced, etc. (And, no, it's not the work of "L" Kabong).
Steve83 04-04-2007, 01:53 AM It's the road workers playing Pac-Man.

No, those lines are small and perpendicular to the direction of the road. Cops don't use helicopters, they just sit on sections of road where they can see you from half a mile away.
I always thought those markings were for indicating underground pipe connections or something.
yikesbb 04-04-2007, 09:53 AM Those are probably arial targets for surveying. If you look at the points, there will probably be a concrete nail or surveyors monument. The points can be alot of things....beginning/ending of curves, for example and although they are not on the centerline of the road, they may be on the centerline of the easement. They may be doing a preliminary topo map for some major project in the area. Could be street improvements, subdivisions, water run-off, malls, transporting extremely large spaceships, etc.

x2 Thats my vote...maby minus the extremely large spaceships.
bnkrtstk 04-04-2007, 10:44 AM I think they mean one side of the block is greater than the other.
Gacknar 04-04-2007, 10:47 AM Cops don't use helicopters,Correct, they use fixed wing aircraft.
they just sit on sections of road where they can see you from half a mile away. That is also true, but...
In 1959 the state police started using the stop watch method of measuring vehicle speeds from airplanes. The state police now operate a fleet of fixed-wing aircraft for speed enforcement http://www.isp.state.il.us/traffic/speedlimitenf.cfm
I have personaly seen "Speed dected by aircraft" signs in Florida.
Those marks could be a lot of things. I'm going to go with them being markers for buried water lines with the arrow showing the direction of flow.
Danny's Daddy 04-04-2007, 10:57 AM On Interstate 80 in PA they do use aircraft. Then you get a speeding ticket in the mail. My friend got one going to Indiana.
ScorpionBoy 04-04-2007, 11:21 AM On Interstate 80 in PA they do use aircraft. Then you get a speeding ticket in the mail. My friend got one going to Indiana.
wonder how they know who to send it to?
adrian? dude, you drove around for 10 mins locating those things?
Iolaus 04-04-2007, 12:28 PM Do they bracket an enclosed center? Can you find a 4th corner If so, I vote for ariel survey.
Steve83 04-04-2007, 01:01 PM Cops don't use helicopters...Correct, they use fixed wing aircraft. That's really gonna make my friend the LA state trooper unhappy, since he's only a few weeks from completing the training & becoming one of their helicopter pilots. ;)
Gacknar 04-04-2007, 02:13 PM That's really gonna make my friend the LA state trooper unhappy, since he's only a few weeks from completing the training & becoming one of their helicopter pilots. ;)Point taken, they use both :toothless
reptillikus 04-04-2007, 05:53 PM I think they mean one side of the block is greater than the other.

Ok let me rephrase, cops don't use helicopters for speed enforcement.:whiteflag
I'd never heard of planes being used for speed enforcement, I would have thought it too expensive. Learn something new everyday....
bigbroncojeff 04-04-2007, 07:25 PM surveyors set these on them (master stations, gps, leveling instruments, other things)
http://www.ci.salem.va.us/depts/engineering/images/tools3.jpg
they are boundries or markings for surveying... they need the marks to be easily found again and to not wear off from traffic... a lot of times they are crosses .....if it wasn't in the street there will be some kind of pin driven into the ground or another marker
some contractors chisel croses in the cement some paint circles for the feet of the triposd etc...
Steve83 04-04-2007, 09:30 PM ...cops don't use helicopters for speed enforcement.I'll try to remember to axe him next time I talk to him, but I got the impression they DO use them for speed enforcement (among many other things).
fairlane_68 04-04-2007, 09:33 PM Point taken, they use both :toothless
Here in VA, the State PD decided to use the new Hemi Chargers instead. :shocked
I assume they still use aircraft...
adrianspeeder 04-05-2007, 10:12 PM Thanks fer the survey info!
Found two more today. Bout a mile from the other three and these two line up.

Interestingly this one is on a private driveway to a farm and is about 1/2mile from the above one in a line.

Cracker 04-05-2007, 10:25 PM The markers are where the YAMS have their secret late night meetings.
willjones4 04-05-2007, 11:36 PM come to think of it, they do look a lot like a carpenter's square. its the masons!
WasACop3436 04-05-2007, 11:38 PM Hey fatty (adrian:goodfinge )
Do you own or know anyone who owns a GPS? Mark the locations along with the direction they are pointing on a map using the gps.
Why are all the marks on the road? :scratchhe
Gacknar 04-06-2007, 09:28 AM It's probably marks off where the asteroid will hit.
tarustwins 04-06-2007, 11:27 AM On Interstate 80 in PA they do use aircraft. Then you get a speeding ticket in the mail. My friend got one going to Indiana.
We have em in South FL too, they run for about 20 miles along Bee Line Highway running to Moroso Motorsports Park. It's amusing driving around there after they hold import days, you can usually find a bunch of cops sitting by the exit handing out tickets to car's they tagged from the air.
They also run on the Fl Turnpike between Ft Pierce and Orlando, my father got pegged driving to Disney once, they stopped into a service plaza for lunch, when they came out, there was a HP parked behind him waiting with a ticket.
willjones4 04-06-2007, 11:48 PM wonder how well those type of tickets hold up in court?
