View Full Version : 404 portal box supports
The weakest link to 404 mog axles is supposed to be
the portal box. Can get bling boxes for 2500$,

but I'm not spending that kind of coin. Guy on pirates
came up with another one of those "I'll have a bunch
made" one time deals. 83$ for 4 sets of braces, can't
go wrong for that......... I may have to trim them as I
already have a different disk brake bracket.....

96broncoman 05-01-2007, 05:26 PM wow, thats a cool deal you got. i dont have 404's but im curious what you are beefing up and what about that box is weak??

That is the only real part that anyone has broke (couple guys have broek the collar that engages the locker, but that was probaly due to be partially engaged and getting on it).
I haven't broken any yet, but why wait. Theory is that a gear tooth chips off, due to misalignment from flex in the case (the older 404 boxes are helical gears where the newer one's are straight with no side load). After the tooth rolls around in there a bit, it gets shot out of the case and makes a big crack (or starts a small one that gets bigger).
Can I have thoses for my Ford 9" axles?
Dayamn! 31 spline, ARB, True Hi9, custom housing, and portals!(drool)
What do those go in?

You could but it was cheaper (and stronger IMO) to keep the stock 404 housings, so I did.
Not sure what you mean by "what do those go in"........
badass1tonf100 05-01-2007, 08:22 PM strength wise... how do they stand up against Rockwells ?
reptillikus 05-01-2007, 08:45 PM If it wasnt for that weak point, they seem to take just as much abuse. the bigger ones (406 & U1300) are practically bomb-proof. Also, the portal box halves the load on the axle shafts & ujoints, so no one ever really breaks them (i cant recall anyone ever doing it). Just dont forget that there is 4 ujoints in that axle!
96broncoman 05-01-2007, 11:46 PM thats pretty beefy....and to think i thought that a 10.25 and a d60 would have me set.....

If you beef up rocks with alloy shafts and such, I have to give them the edge (vs 404's). I picked up a set of 406's and they are rated 4 ton (and look like it, 4.5 inch axle tubes, everything is huge). Even with the 406's, I'd probably have to give the slight edge to the rocks for knuckle strength.
BUT, you'd have to run 52's to get my ground clearance, so all things equal, I'll take the mogs with 42's vs the rocks with 52's.

It NEVER ends........... :toothless

Funny the 406's seem to use the same CV setup as the 404's. Not sure if that means the 404's were massively overdone or the 406's were underdone?? Never heard of any breakage, not even from the mog guys running a 12,000 lb 406, so probably safe with my measly 6500 lbs.
Are those be goin' under your bronc or what? Perhaps I've missed a build thread?
Chuck 05-02-2007, 06:28 PM I think you've missed a few. They've been under his Bronc for a couple of years, I think. :thumbup

Yup, and looking to upgrade to 406 axles eventually.

Im thinking that the shafts/CVs are massively over-rated for the 404s which is why they use the same ones in the 406s. Seems to me that if they knew enough to design a better portal box for the 406s that they would have addressed the shafts too, if it was actually a strength issue.
