So I am looking at the Autofab fiberglass front fenders and the mounting frame that looks like it will make mounting easier as well as stiffining it up. They have a set for my year (89) that has 2" buldge and 2" larger opening, the 92-96 has 3 1/2" buldge and 2 1/2" larger opening so do you guys think the one for the 89 has enough buldge and opening? I'm not going to race class 300 or anything like that but will be playing a bit. The other thing is if I do the 92-96 setup I'll have to swap out the grille, is it worth all that? How hard was it to mount your front fenders and the bedsides?
I"m going with the cut and turn beams but I'm not shure whether to go with coil springs or coil overs. I would like something that works good in a larger variety of situations more than something that works great in one area and poor everywhere else. What are your thoughts?

Yea, I figured if I swapped then I would go with Jon's cowl induction hood.

I had a set of autofabs 87-91 fenders They are well made, i liked that they didn't have a big bulge. The opening was large enough to clear tires, but small enough to still look good.

The only thing i didn't like about them was how they just popped out. There was no flow to the fender, when it came to the opening, like i said they just popped out. It kinda looked like a-s-s.

I switched to glassworks which have a smooth flow in the opening, but is a little bit to large for my tatses. Autofab has come out with a new "ashley" style 87-91 fender that from what i understand is a copy of glassworks. Blanco got the first set, but i have'nt seen any pics yet.

As far as the core support you can skin your outer fender leaving the stock core support, and hang the fenders from that, that's what i did. It saved me a few hundread dollars doing it that way.

How do the fenders hang when you skin the stockers like you said? I agree that will save around 300 bones and that's alot when I'm rebuilding EVERYTHING!!

If you look at your stock fenders you will see that they are 2 pieces put together. Looking at the top of the fender inside the engine bay, you will see the inner and outer riveted together. Cut the top and outer portion of the fender off. Here's some pics hopefully you will see what i'm talking about.

No, I meant how well does it hang when you pull the outer off and hang the fiberglass without the frame

The new 87-91 fenders look very nice. Tire clearance should not be a problem at all. I have used the newer ones with the 3" over beams and it was no ploblem. Coil springs will drive better on the street, but you cant beat the feel of coil overs in the dirt. Autofab has the nicest glass around by far(and the most expensive). The fenders are not a glassworks copy because thats not how he works. Besides that I gave him a really nice set of stock ones to make the mold plugs out off. You would know if they were a copy because glass shrinks a little as it drys,so if you took a fender that shunk a little from glassworks made a mold from it that was to small and made more fenders that were small nothing would fit right. Think of it like a copy of a copy of a copy on a cassete tape. pretty crappy results. And the old fender he made for the 87-91 were nice quality but so so ugly.

Thanks man. I like dealing with the guys from Autofab, I haven't bought yet but they have been very informative and helpful in steering me in the right direction.

Great! You are replacing the metal skin with a fiberglass one.
