View Full Version : End Of Summer Cookout - GEORGIA

Ok ya'll.

I didn't do this last year, because I felt a "lack of interest" of sorts. I guess two years in a row, the coolness factor kinda wore off.

So I'm bringing it back this year. The Dixie Chapter Cookout. w00t

I'm thinking about doing it at the same place again, or somewhere around Allatoona lake. And probably September 22nd, or the 29th - the last two Saturdays in September.

Who's interested? There will be a sign up sheet for folks to bring different things, and there's horseshoes, a volleyball net, and playground for the kiddies. Fun for the whole family. This is purely a cookout, get together type deal. There will be no wheelin' involved.

EDIT - Ok, just to bring anybody up to date so you don't have to read all 4 pages.

It's at Cooper Branch #1 near the Allatoona Dam in Cartersville, GA on September 22nd. Probably eat around 2 or so. Some folks are planning on camping. Keep an eye out for an "official" thread with directions, details and sign up for food.

Im there.
I also like the Alatoona idea.

Do they have a pavilion somwhere near, or at a campsite?
Out of towners could spend the night.

I might even be able to work out a deal where I could even stay the night :toothless

Before I pick a date, I'm gonna try and ride up to Red Top this Sunday and scope out the camping/picnic areas. I know they have some cabins and a lodge if anyone wants to spend the night and not "rough" it.

I really like that Pavillion, too, Jerm, the Cooper Branch #1, but I kinda wondered if people could find it. It's on the road that goes up to the dam, I think. I'll call and check on it when I get a chance.

And yes, thank you for mentioning the money issue. That's why I didn't push the cookout last year, because the first two years I heard, "Oh yeah, we'll pitch in to pay." And I think I got maybe $10 or $20 from a couple people.

I like the coopers branch #1 mainly because that huge grill and it doesnt look like you have a lot of stairs to get to the water. On the furnace side there are more bugs because its not right on the river its just standing water from when it overflows from generating the lake and yes there are lots of stairs. Either way we should be there and since i'm only about seven miles from there let me know if there is anything i can do beforehand to save a trip for anyone. Anybody got horseshoe's? I could make some signs and put them up the day before to help people find the way if needed

They have cottages/cabins just down the road from the Lodge, you can call them for prices and reservations. I think like Gack said, he posted a link with info to the Lodge for the phone number.

Like he said, the date is September 22nd and we usually eat around lunch time and hang out for the afternoon. As far as the location, it'll be somewhere around the Allatoona lake.

I found a link to the map of the lake.

We're at Cooper Branch #1 which is the little red circle "2" on the map. For those of you that came in years past we were at Coopers Furnace which is 42 for an idea of general vicinity.

http://allatoona.sam.usace.army.mil/Allatoona%20maps/Lakemap.htm

It also shows you the locations of various campgrounds and their facilities. I suggest you campers start a thread so ya'll can collaborate on who is staying where and maybe decide on one location to all stay together.

The McKaskey Creek campground will be closest to the picnic shelter at the red "4" on the map. You just go back down the main road the shelter is off of and take a right to the campground. I've stayed there yeeeears ago and remember it being pretty nice and right on the water.

Yeah, you won't be driving around on the other side of the mountain looking for us. We're not actually in the "park" of Red Top. It's on that road that goes up to the dam if you've ever been up there.

I don't think I'll ever forget you getting out the truck and coming across the parking lot saying, "mels is never plannin this shit again because these are NOT drunk friendly roads!" :toothless

Ok, went and paid for it today. Scoped it out. Will post a couple pics later. The only problem I see is that parking is very limited. But the office is nearby with more parking, so we may have to park some folks up there and carpool to the picnic shelter or something.

Also, there's about 4-5 hotels right at the exit. Country Inn and Suites, Ramada, Hampton Inn, Days Inn and a Super 8 I think.

I'm in a hurry so I'll post up more later. Probably won't start an official thread with directions and details until the first of September.

But go ahead and put it on your calender, September 22nd, eat around 2 pm or so. Cooper Branch #1, Allatoona Dam, Cartersville, GA.

Mels
08-05-2007, 08:23 PM
There will be no camping at McKaskey Creek the weekend of the cookout. Apparently the campground closes on September 4th.

If ya'll are coming from out of town, my suggestion is to get one of the hotels at GA 20. Simply for ease, because it's right at the interstate and closest to the picnic shelter. If you wanna camp somewhere else, go for it.

I got this information from Alan, he just called me and was riding around up there and found out the campground IN Red Top park is booked up, they said something about a big event or something that weekend. :shrug

Just trying to keep ya'll updated.

Never said ya'll couldn't camp. It's just that the other campgrounds and cottages/lodge are on the other side of the lake and about 5 miles back down the interstate. It's just that one campground was like 2 miles from the shelter, and the hotels are right at the exit, so they're the most convenient.

Damn, I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should have gone with Cooper's Furnace, there's a lot more room there.

But noooooo, somebody *cough*teh gacknar*cough* wanted on the water.

Yeah, I know...I'm just concerned about us feeling cramped or crowded because this area seemed more popular with people just hanging out. Whereas at the furnace it was more private and more room.

It's like there are 30 picnic tables all over this one area with the shelter right in the middle.

I just like teh water.

You can always concell it and reserve Coopers.:thumbup
I dont want it ruined just to be on the water. If you think we will have a better time at coopers, then lets go there. I don't want it ruined just becouse I like water :toothless

The only thing I worry about at Cooper's Branch #1 is parking. There we may have to park scattered out, I dont know I have never actualy been there. It is nice to be able to line the Broncos all up next to each other. Hopefully we can work somthing out so that we can, may just have to walk a little further is all.

Other then that I think it will be fine. Who cares if there are other folks at tables near us, they wont bother us any. (Atleast not me)

It will be funner for the kids...:thumbup
I dont know, it doesn't have a playground or a beach. I wasn't really thinking about kids when I sugested it.
http://allatoona.sam.usace.army.mil/Shelters/shelter_selection.htm
But they do allow alcohol and pets :toothless

Hopfully the kids will have a good time too.
Theres got to be somthing there that will keep them entertained.:chili:

Mels

I understand having it on the water, but at the Furnace there is a playground for the kids and more room.

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but I'm really concerned about parking. I went over there on a Saturday, about the time we would be there and there were already 10-11 cars only leaving maybe 10-15 spaces left. Then more parking is at the top of the hill at the Office.

I may call them tomorrow and see if they'll let me switch to the Cooper's Furnace. I'd just feel better if I knew we were guaranteed room to spread out.

Audra
08-13-2007, 10:49 PM
is cooper's furnace on the water?

Mels
08-13-2007, 11:18 PM
Not really. It's by the river, and you can get down to the river, but like Chris said it's more of an area where the water isn't moving much. And it's not like you can get in it.

I may try to switch to Cooper's Branch #2. It's kinda on the water, but it is more private....and a little more parking.

Audra
08-13-2007, 11:25 PM
no stagnant water, this time of year that would mean mosquitoes from hell.

Mels
08-13-2007, 11:28 PM
It's really not that bad. The shelter isn't really ON the river...we've never had problems with skeeters there before. :shrug

I went back and looked at the list again and I'm gonna call tomorrow about two other shelters and see if they'll let me switch. If not, we'll just take our chances with the parking.

If your worried about the parking then Coopers will work fine :chili:
(I can live without being on the water:toothless)

Hopfully not Sweetwater Day Use Area (http://allatoona.sam.usace.army.mil/Shelters/Sweetwater/sweetwater.htm) or Galt's Ferry (http://allatoona.sam.usace.army.mil/Shelters/Galts/GaltsFerry.htm), they dont allow Beer :toothless :beer

But if so, we can just keep it on the down low and hide it in Dixie cups :thumbup :toothless

I'll dooo eeet! I got it under control.
