View Full Version : Switch HOSTS POLL?
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 12:44 PM As most of you know a couple of weeks ago we had a downtime of a couple of hours and then a few days ago we had sporadic downtime for a whole day, one time lasting for many hours, this do to a harddisk failure according to my host, the server the host has us on seems to be an older 1200MHz/256 server and may be nearing a point of continued problems and again maybe not, I am considering changing to another host that will provide a much newer and much faster server thats in one of the best and largest datacenters in the US, this host i believe would offer us better/faster support and a greater uptime and yes with all this would be added hosting costs, from 20.00 a month to 30.00 a month, so I want everyones opinions
so Joe what does this mean to us?
#1 the host i am considering will transfer all files for us for a 25.00 charge, so the transition should be fairly smooth without much downtime at all
#2 for about 3-4 days the fullsizebronco.com domain wouldnt show up, it would be something like http://somename.com/fsb/index.html(for example) until the DNS propagates and fullsizebronco.com starts to show up again
#3 i would have to close the forums probably for 15 minutes to backup the data base and transfer ALL posts and users so that nothing is lost, i would try to do this in off peak hours
#4 everyone going to the current forum address would be redirected within a few secons to the new address, you wont have to worry about trying to find the board
#5 a few images may not show up until i get all the image paths changed, no biggie there
#6 if everything went as it is supposed to you probably wont even realize it is happening
so let me know your thoughts and concerns as quick as possible, this all may happen late tonight or tommorow or maybe not at all, you can see the questions i have asked to the potential host in their forums at... http://httpme.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5931
NOBS! 03-29-2003, 12:48 PM only if it's more reliable
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 12:48 PM for all you computer guru's this is what the server specs are....
Our servers are state of the art Intel Dual XEON 2.0GHz with Hyperthreading, 2x512KB cache, 2.0GB ECC RAM, 2x80GB 7200rpm drives and Hardened secure Kernel. These extremely powerful servers are located in the NAC datacenter, using only Premium NAC bandwidth. No DCJN bandwidth used. Reliability, extreme uptime and fanatical support is our focus and total obsession. The combination of Intel Dual XEON 2.0GHz, 2GB ECC RAM servers and Premium NAC bandwidth, makes for an extremely reliable hosting platform.
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 12:51 PM only if it's more reliable
i think it would be myself but i'm no hosting guru by any means, here is the downtime for the server we would be put on...
2003
March 3 0 hrs, 48 mins, 33 secs 99.881%(uptime)
February 0 0 hrs, 0 mins, 0 secs 100.000%(uptime)
Big Mike C. 03-29-2003, 12:51 PM Being computer illiterate I will leave this one to you guys that know more about that stufff...but with the new site, could we post pictures directly to the site?
Damager 03-29-2003, 01:16 PM I would think we would need a better term for uptime judgement....2 months doesn't really tell us much...what about january? .. what about the year before?
Hard call to make Bro....I think this would have to be up to you....we will never have 100% uptime, even if the host claims that...we would need a complete 100% reduduncy failover unit waiting in the background for the main box to go down...If you can find a host that will provide this for the same cost, then you are lucky and better hop on it.
I just don't know man...current hardware is a nice thing to have...it is piece of mind, but I have clients who have servers that have been running for years and years with no issues ( I sell hardware/software/networking gear)
Bronkzilla 03-29-2003, 01:26 PM i voted for (yes) and if i had a second vote id vote for (I'll chip in an extra few bucks to have a better home!)
allcruisen 03-29-2003, 02:27 PM i voted for (yes) and if i had a second vote id vote for (I'll chip in an extra few bucks to have a better home!)
My words exactly, if need be I will be willing to pay a yearly fee, if thats the case. I asked before if and how can I donate money?
Allcruisen :pimp :pimp :pimp
P.S. Joe, nice one ''Paranoid as Pepe`", why is everyone always picking on me?
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 03:38 PM I asked before if and how can I donate money?
through the "make a donation" button at the top of the forums or PM me for my home address to send cash/check/money order
we will never have 100% uptime, even if the host claims that...
i know no host can ever give 100% uptime, i wouldnt sign up with one that did because they'd be lying, but our current host has no guarantee whatsoever, no refund/credit for downtime, no server status page, i have been with them since november of 2002, a total of 5 months and never had a downtime until the last 3-4 weeks, so maybe i'm overreacting but at the same time I want FSB to be reliable and here for all members, i few more votes, comments, ideas anyone ?
Broncobob 03-29-2003, 03:59 PM for all you computer guru's this is what the server specs are....

Hyperthreading rocks! Lets do it for this reason alone hahaha!
Dirtdigger 03-29-2003, 04:17 PM Joe YOU Know you got my vote on switching . :D
dogonmut 03-29-2003, 04:36 PM #3 i would have to close the forums probably for 15 minutes
It'll be down for that long? Oh no! I'm having DT's just thinking of being off line for that long?
What ever you think will serve the site the best in the long run. If you need money, outside the normal donations, to make things like this happen, I'm sure we have members, myself included, that will be glad to kick in for an added expense to keep our home safe.
I think I speak for everyone here...Thanks Joe for looking after our best interests and we'll support what ever choice you make.
78bronco460 03-29-2003, 04:51 PM To me it's no difference. If a website is down for whatever reason, I just go to it later. If you do have to shut it down to work on it then that's what you gotta do. It's not like you're shutting off granny's pacemaker... BY THE WAY: This is a way cool website, and I wanna say thanks for putting it here.
Bronkzilla 03-29-2003, 04:52 PM I asked before if and how can I donate money?

You quoted the wrong person joe... im suing you!!!!
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 05:01 PM You quoted the wrong person joe... im suing you!!!!
oops i changed it, you have no proof  moon
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 05:06 PM I think I speak for everyone here...Thanks Joe for looking after our best interests and we'll support what ever choice you make.
thanks, i just want it to be a great place to come thats reliable for everyone
MOUNTAINMAN 03-29-2003, 05:47 PM I voted for: I'll chip in an extra few bucks to have a better home!
Even though it's hard making ends meet on a disability check, I'm willing to donate some a few times a year like I did over there.
allcruisen 03-29-2003, 07:55 PM Bronkzilla, how can you sue when it was me who asked the stupid question? And if you do sue I want half!
Allcruisen :pimp :pimp :pimp
dsotmoon 03-29-2003, 08:48 PM everyone may notice the occasional blurb as i prepare the site for a possible change, more than likely its gonna happen, probably in the next couple of days
allcruisen 03-29-2003, 09:45 PM You the man, Joe! You do what you have to do and if dogonmut {scott} cant wait the 15 minutes or so that the site will be done then wait till he see's what I can do with his pics. {MAD LAUGH}hahahahaha
Allcruisen :pimp :pimp :pimp
gearrat 03-29-2003, 11:11 PM you the man joe i voted it would chip in a few extra bucks with no problem
BikerPepe` 03-30-2003, 11:20 AM Hmmm...
Joe you are as paranoid as Pepe', leave it be man!
Yea yea... like AC said... "Why's everybody always picking on me?" LOL!
I voted for the switch... sounds like Joe scoped out a pretty solid server and while I would never expect 100% uptime... the more the better!
Go for it JOE... I think we're all behind ya man!
dsotmoon 03-30-2003, 01:35 PM i'm going to start the switch today, you probably wont notice anything for a day or two and i'm going to send out a mass email to let everyone know...
if something happens and you find the board is down this is the address to a temporary board everyone can post on and find any updates I may have, put this in your favorites folder just in case...
http://dsotmoon.myikonboard.com/viewboard.php
you shouldnt have to use it though
BikerPepe` 03-30-2003, 01:52 PM What a guy... going through all this trouble for us!
How can you say "THANKS" to the same guy, so many times without sounding redundant... YOU rockon JOE!!!
MOUNTAINMAN 03-30-2003, 03:18 PM I agree. http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/users/2269/1430/yourock.gif
dsotmoon 03-30-2003, 05:46 PM they are starting to set things up now, just received my confirmation that the account has been set up, it will take a while to get the transfer going, i'll keep everyone updated
dsotmoon 03-30-2003, 08:03 PM they are starting to transfer now, you should notice no changes, carry on men, and women
BikerPepe` 03-30-2003, 08:04 PM I hit a hickup... lasted about 2 minutes... NOT a big deal! Keep up the fine, outstanding work DSOT-JOE!
dsotmoon 04-02-2003, 10:19 PM i think the DNS is currently trying to change so it may be weird for a little while
dsotmoon 04-02-2003, 10:21 PM we'll be getting fullsizebronco.com back shortly now, but it may make the board a little silly for a while, may have to hit reply twice, login again, that sorta thing, dont freak out
dsotmoon 04-02-2003, 11:08 PM the domain names and everything are working like normal for me, anyone else?
BikerPepe` 04-02-2003, 11:15 PM Nope... still reading:
http://koala.dns-nac-zone.com/~fullsize/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1020&start=20
Edit: would you look at that! URL's are resolving to clikies automatically now. Or I just noticed. :P
MOUNTAINMAN 04-03-2003, 01:17 PM the domain names and everything are working like normal for me, anyone else?
Yup, my address bar is showing "http://fullsizebronco.com/" this morning. Looks like the transition is working good to me. :thumbup
BikerPepe` 04-03-2003, 01:53 PM the domain names and everything are working like normal for me, anyone else?

Yup... yup. Today its saying http://www.fullsizebronco.com
http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/users/2116/1332/FSBRULES2.gif
Davids78Bronco 04-03-2003, 10:55 PM I don't know about anyone else, but I'm having to log in twice before I can reply or post. Even then, all the forums are shown as having been read
dsotmoon 04-03-2003, 10:59 PM i'm not, anyone else? i can play with the cookie setting some if others are having problems too
1982bronco 04-03-2003, 11:19 PM its all good here for me.
Davids78Bronco 04-04-2003, 12:42 AM That figures. AFAIK, Jon and I were the only ones that had to log in each time before the switch.....now I get to do it twice...lol
Dustin 04-04-2003, 12:46 AM everything just shows as being read all the time for me
MOUNTAINMAN 04-04-2003, 11:34 AM everything just shows as being read all the time for me
I've been getting that for the last couple of days too. :???:
Jon0807 04-04-2003, 04:12 PM That figures. AFAIK, Jon and I were the only ones that had to log in each time before the switch.....now I get to do it twice...lol
ya, why is it only us two?
but I don't have to log in twice, once I log it it'll keep me logged in even when I post. Then if I walk away for a while (not sure how long...haven't timed it) I have to log in again.
and it shows all messages as being read. Everything was fine when it was redirecting us to the other URL. But when it switched back to fullsizebronco.com the problem started up again
MOUNTAINMAN 04-04-2003, 04:17 PM You guys are just lucky. ;)
Jon0807 04-04-2003, 04:35 PM I wish it was luck...could use a bit of that right now
Dustin 04-04-2003, 06:43 PM try deleting your cookies and try it again....worked for me
dsotmoon 04-04-2003, 07:47 PM there seems to be some kind of server issue right now too but i have been assured it is being worked on and will be fixed soon
Dustin 04-04-2003, 08:02 PM ok nevermind cookies didnt fix it
dsotmoon 04-04-2003, 08:41 PM ok, i adjusted the cookie settings, Jon/David, log out, delete your cookies off your computer and sign back in and see if it happens on the first try, if not i'll try something else
dsotmoon 04-04-2003, 09:43 PM our new host seems to be having some problems, only with the server we are on, sorry guys, i have no doubt they'll get it fixed though
Davids78Bronco 04-06-2003, 12:33 AM Well, I no longer have to log in twice, but the threads are still showing all having been read already - minor detail.....just having to log in twice was buggin me
Jon0807 04-06-2003, 03:45 AM same thing here.....having to log in after being off the site for an hour or so and all the threads are read
Davids78Bronco 04-06-2003, 05:41 AM Hahaha, jinxed myself - back to having to log in twice agian....and the threads are still showing as having been read already
dsotmoon 04-06-2003, 11:34 AM having to log in after being off the site for an hour or so and all the threads are read
the forum is designed to automatically log off after 60 minutes of inactivity, some kind of security measure
dsotmoon 04-06-2003, 11:39 AM Hahaha, jinxed myself - back to having to log in twice agian....and the threads are still showing as having been read already
i found the way to fix the log in twice problem but it caused others not to be able to post at all so i had to change it back, it all has to do with cookies, right now there is no perfect setting so we'll have to go with the one that works best, hopefully all this will be cleared up when the new version come out later this year
Jon0807 04-06-2003, 03:10 PM hey look! I'm still logged in after 8 hours! and i'm getting unread posts!
Jon0807 04-07-2003, 12:29 AM everything is going great so far....how bout you David?
