Yes. I finally got started on my Prairie Runner project. lots of parts to go yet. as well as alot of labor. would like to have it ready to chase/spectate for some races next year. Lots to do now that I'm steering away from a rock rig.

excuse the fact its not on the truck yet.

anyway...want to gather a few parts then start the install. but also wanted to get this stuff while it was "cheap" and shipping wasn't an issue. I dont know just how soon it will get installed but I'll keep you all updated. I can hardly wait.

Got a 9" recently that Im building too.

will have all the original sheet metal avail for sale as soon as I can.

Do the rear panels have a buldge?

locopny
06-27-2007, 06:02 PM
yes they have a bulge-- it just doesn't show in the pic I took earlier. I can get other photos later.

See the white rig in the sig line? same look. Just started the build. but for you I'll put a current photo in the thread. happy?

Oh, I forgot to add that this glass is Perry Fab and Fiber stuff.

Way to go Tom! Now if you thought it was expensive to build a rock rig...just wait and see! :shocked

I just told Cam....in for a dime....in for $10K

sorry Brian..thought I did answer by PM...guess not. I'm Jealous of your rig..still further along than mine.

Yes I know how expensive this is gonna get Nick. a Rock rig would probably be cheaper....but not real practical in the upper plains...where theres' an abundance of rocks.
Atleast I can do most if not all the fab work myself. which makes it take forever.

Probably cant do baja this year, but I'm interested in a trip like what was talked about at the breakfast Beard seat sale day...

rigs gonna be sweet man, im gonna take mine in that direction instead of sas

edit; its mcneil racing, their flares are also 300for a pair, and 400 for a hood--i'll go this way instead of one peice

Hopefully he'll invest in some baja t/a's those things are pretty much indestructable. But what am i talking about, it's Tom...:toothless

I think its safe to say I am never gonna be able to keep tires inflated. It would be nice, but history says otherwise.

I was considering another new set of tires eventually...something in the 35" variety...Bajas sound nice-but expensive. maybe the new Muds due out will be better-gotta buy 6 of them ya know(dual spares).

this is awhile down the road though.

maybe by then I can get a Tweel sponsorship....:histerica

So CAL guys...know where I can find this locally..like FRIDAY? otherwise I'm ordering it so I can get the 9" installed soon. I'll go ahead and steal the calipers/discs and 3rd member out of the EB to replace them later.
that way I can get the gear and brake swap done for as cheap as I can. then can mess with getting the front gears done when ever.

heres the 4.56 and detroit stolen from my EB for my 9" in the full size.

the axle shafts that I need to get new bearings and seals for...
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/542545/fullsize/p7160018.jpg

after work tommorrow I will be buying discs, and longer studs, as well as new brakelines so I can get the rear put together this weekend.

I do plan on installing a drain plug in the bottom of the 9"er. Ill just add a protector tube around the drain plug for now, and skid plate it later. anyone see any issues with that?

I'll also have to truss it at a later date. no time to get to the steel yard this weekend and still get it installed. probably pushing it anyway.

Hey Loco,

CP

I was hoping to already have started...but been super busy with work and trying to get back home that I haven't had time to get a few parts that I need to get the front put on. I will eventually build a front cage around the time I redo the front suspension, so I'd like to have the stock rad support for now to measure from later.

Now with the rear making so much noise...it gets pushed back even further. *might* have the chance to install the rear panels before I leave CA. would love to have it all on but I need to hit the Lotto or something first so I could hire it done.

Are you going to buy a weld-in bung for the drain plug? Where exactly do you plan to put it? If it's going directly on the bottom, just try to leave it hanging out 1/4" or less and then weld a small piece of 3/8" plate or flat stock to the bottom with a good chamfer on the leading edge. I've got a 20ft length of 3/8" x 4" hot roll flat stock that would be good for just such a thing. Let me know if you need some.

Oh! And if you've got another 9 laying around, I could use one. :toothless

locopny
08-12-2007, 02:32 AM
I had planned to place it on the bottom. I picked up a 1/2"x 20 TPI magnetic drain plug that I thought I'd just drill and tap in the flat area just to the side of the ring gear. I probably have a 1/8" piece of flat stock that was the correct size to add to the bottom of the 9. I can increase that to something thicker if ya think that is necessary. the protector tube is actually a short (1" ) piece of 1.25" BIP I had lying around. large enough for a socket to fit inside to get at the bolt head. I'll take a couple photos tommorrow. I didn't see any weld in bungs when I got my plug. Monday is the soonest I can locate one now I suspect.
Were you thinking the 3/8" plate is acting as a "skid ramp" on the leading edge of the low side on the diff? or more as a bolt head protector on the bottom...having the chamfer to ease access for the socket? I'm alittle bit confused...and maybe I'm not making sense now...

Today was mostly a prep day getting the rotors, bearings, press work done , brake lines, & wheel stud bolts purchased.

got home to cut the shims from the drum backing plates (fun...lots of sparks), marked the rotors for the axle retaining nut access holes, spent an hour buffing my rear:toothless:doh0715: with a drill and wire wheel. Gotta put it in the bronco all purty, right?

Im just hoping I can get it all built and installed tommorrow.

Look to have about $575 into the build on this 9"....and it still isn't trussed.:banghead & I think I'm getting away pretty cheap

rotors............................................ ............$ 60
complete housing.........................................$ 75
9" detroit/4.56.............................................$ 325 (used)
brake lines, wheel studs, drain plug, bearings.....$126
paint............................................. .............$free
caddy calipers, pads......................................$free (Previously installed in my EB at a cost of about $140)

Brian...I dont have another 9. but I can find ya one if you want. I know I can use some fab'n skills you have. give me another reason to make the trek back to Ca

locopny

didnt get as far as i hoped to.

all on the account of the wheel bolts were wrong...you are not supposed to be able to seat them with your index finger. took the wind out of the sails....and added about 2 hours of down time trying to get the right ones.

I mean ones I could make work until I upgrade to a larger stud size.

Brian- this is the drain plug I got...
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/552378/fullsize/p8120017.jpg

the assembled axle and disc
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/552379/fullsize/p8120020.jpg
disc is ground for access hole for axle retaining bolts...may have been faster to use a hole saw after the axle and disc were assembled.

the pre paint shot of the housing..lots of surface rust removed
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/552380/fullsize/p8120015.jpg

hoping to get home from work early and get nearly finished with it. still need to weld on the caliper brackets now that the discs are installed, weld on the brakeline to hose brackets, paint the housing...little stuff from here on out I hope

coming along really good Tom...boy that rear axle looks familair...

I also added a drain plug to mine but put it off center so it would not be prone to damage....and also flushed it with the axle housing.

update to the rear build

plate that protects drain plug...(its actually a part from HD..a Simpson Bolt Plate 7/8) prefect for the 1/2"x 20 drain plug I have.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/553487/fullsize/p8160021.jpg

another shot of it...chamferred the leading edge
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/553488/fullsize/p8160020.jpg

here is the back side of the disc. notice the spacer that used to be the backing plate....needed that to keep the distances original.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/553489/fullsize/p8160019.jpg

here is the disc mounted to the axle flange. went together much better than it did on the EB. Studs are shorter than I'd like, but they wont be in there longterm. eventually going to upgrade to larger studs.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/553490/fullsize/p8160018.jpg

My work area. atleast its out of the direct sunlight. little cramped though.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/553492/fullsize/p8160017.jpg

As it sits tonight...I have the caliper brackets ready to weld on, and the spring perch stiffners ready to cut and weld on. I think I will be installing this on Sat. morning/noon. After noon, I talk to a neighbor about starting my cage. (This would be the last of the projects on it this year as the spendable hobby income will be depleted)

sorry no photos tonight...actually wanted to work.:toothless

locopny

while I'm waiting for paint to dry...

reason for the discs bolted on the back side of the axle flange? no machine work to open up the internal on the disc &/or turning down the axle flange.
Junkyard replacement parts anywhere in the country and Mexico/canada too I suppose.

I'll be installing it tonight when the temp goes down some. Forgot how much welding in 100* sucks. I feel for you AZ dudes that do this chit in the summer...

Little update to the drain plug...I welded a 1/2" x 20 half nut inside the housing. before installing I cut a couple slots in the bottom of it ( think upside down castle nut). should help allow the last of the oil drain out...but if it doesn't- atleast it provides more threads for the drain plug. bottom of the 9" is about 3/16" thick it appeared.

I'll get some photos of the install later today/night.

'bout dang time I got the rear end all buttoned up late last night. nearly a week to install...I did say it was a slow build.
lots of small issues got in the way of completing. but its all done now.

Detroit is fun on the street. Still have to dial in the rear brakes some....
one is stopping better than the other. no issues other than that.
