Will a heat blower motor just die or slowly go

took the bronco out the other night and it was a cold night...i put the heat on because the windows were fogging up and i was cold...i tried the heat through the vents first, then the defrost...the air comes out a little warm, not really hot, and it's blowing very lightly even when on high...i'm assuming my defrost won't work because the previous owner ripped out the A/C unit, and i'm assuming the defrost works with the A/C...but my question is, if the air is coming out, lightly, could it still be the blower motor going, or does the blower motor just die all together...thanks for your responses....

I took another look at the heat situation, and it seems like the low to high for the heat works fine, it's more switching from defrost to floor, to vent...it's not switching at all...when i switch it, i hear no change...how does the vent system work...would it be a switch that has gone bad if it doesn't switch from vent to floor and so on?

I believe switching from one function to another is vacuum operated. I could be wrong.

I searched the Haynes book, but i can't find any information about the switch indicator and how it works, but found nothing...when i check LMC catalogue, it shows a picture of the switch indicator and it has a little mechanism attached to it...i'm assuming this switches the doors in some way...but i'm not sure....

Yo!
I can't open SM right now so look at this when you can;
Ventilation Duct, Under Dash Diagram for 80-86; "...Pull the glove box &/or radio &/or HVAC control panel so you can look inside the dash & observe the vacuum motor & diverter door lever...If you have an 87-early 88, it's all cable (except the recirculate motor under the hood..."

SOMETHINGS MISSING

somethings missing...i pulled out the radio and the temp control panal...well i pulled that panal out as much as i could, but what i can see is that for the top slide switch, which switches it from cold to hot, there's a cable connected to a tab so when you slide from cold to hot, it pulls the the cable and changes the temp...the bottom slide controls the vent to floor to defrost, but that tab doesn't have a cable connected, it looks like it's missing...the cable just doesn't seem to be back there, but if i could find out where that cable originally went to, i could locate that end and maybe come up with something to fix it...anyone have any ideas where this cable goes to?

one last thing, is there anyway to manually change where you want the air to come out...i'd like to have it come from the defrost all the time since winter is coming, i'm sure i'll need it to defrost the window the most...thanks...

I don't have any more info on your year, but I know from the diagrm I posted above by Steve that there is a floor-defrost door vacuum motor; is the bottom lever using a vac hose?
such as show here again by Steve83
'80-86 A/C control panel

see da "Vacuum Harness" to the Left?

ok, figure out is the defrost door can be modded with an old-school throttle cable or even a bicycle hand brake cable; mount the end under da dash and other end.. ya get the pic?

i'm impressed with your diagrams...i've been searching like crazy for these...anyway, i see the vacuum harness on my switch, everything is plugged in as it should be...the i manually move the vacuum motor lever, but it doesn't stay in the position, it moves back by itself...i also noticed that there is a vacuum motor in the engine compartment too with a vacuum line going into it...there's also a vacuum line coming from the dash switch board into the engine compartment, but it's no hooked up to anything...not sure if it's supposed to be or not...where does the vacuum come from anyway?

thanks, but the Diagrams are from Ford via Steve .. and me...I am adding this to my site as I find them
The vac for the entire sys comes from the Intake Manifold, see diagram below
this should sum it all up I hope.
'92-96 HVAC Vacuum System

- '80-91 similar, except '87-early '88 which use a cable for Floor/Def/Panel. The '80-86 vacuum tank is a plastic ball on the R wheelwell.

i think this is my problem...there's no plastic ball on the R wheel well...i'm guessing that's what that vacum line coming out of my firewall was supposed to plug into...i'll have to search around for that ball...thanks again...

i did find one at LMC for about 30...i wouldn't mind ordering that, but does all it take is to hook up a vacuum line to the tank, from the carb, then run a vacuum line from the tank into the truck?...since the original owner pulled out all the A/C equipment, i'm wonderin if there are additional parts i'd need just to make this work...as for making my own tank, i'm just not that handy...

hmmm.. that is a good (or bad.. depending on what is missing and how much $ you want to spend on parts) Q!

One thAng to consider in that the missing AC and prob other stuff won't help much w/defrosting the windshield, as you well know.

So how about just experimenting with those doors and finding a good position for defrosting the ws and then going to a cable system? or adding a small duct and blower fan for defrosting the ws; say a 12 v DC computer fan?

Yes, get the vacuum off the carb or manifold or whatever a tee can be placed such as da brake booster

yeah, i think a cable system might be the best bet...i pulled one of the levers, but it doesn't seem to change the air flow, so i gotta lotta work to do...the electric fan idea sounds like it might work though...i'll look into that too...i've been searching the forum and the net to see if i could find a picture of what an 84 with a 351w engine compartment should look like, stock...that way i can better identify what parts i am missing, or how much has been changed on mine...any ideas?
