I seen a guy break 3 shafts from a 5 ton at one time trying to pull the Sonoma from TTC 08 out of a mud pit one day, and you could never imagine that it couldn't happen that easily but it did.

I think 5-ton rocks are a little more than 1k front and rear?
Well, I just checked myself, and it does appear that you can get 5 tons for the price of 2.5 tons. It depends on location. I saw most of them down south, probably because of all the military bases down there. Although, still, 5 ton trucks a a lot more than 2.5 tons. What prices are you guys seeing down there for complete 5 ton trucks from private seller?

Sorry to high-jack

Anything can break, but a 5 ton axle set up is only 1k more lbs then a 2.5 ton set up. If you think about it, it's not much, you can't even notice the difference in mud. 5 tons are cheaper most of the time, because not a lot of people use them. Tire size has A LOT to do with breakage, like you said before, you've seen them break pulling on people. Well, tugging & a piss ton of tire weight can break anything. 54" Boggers most likely will not snap a 2.5 ton unless your tugging, no matter what hp you run. Same truck, 50" R2, will most likely snap like candy. 5 tons rarely break, it takes A LOT to make 1 pop, and there's replacement (upgraded aftermarket) shafts for 5 tons as well. Most people who run big money 2.5 tons are trying to stay light weight and fast for competetions, ect....For a plain jane mud truck, 5 tons are a much better choice. 2.5 tons only have 2 gear options as well, 6:72 and 4:90. 5 tons have 4 or 5 if i remember correctly, you can buy 2" axles for 2.5 tons and find other weak parts, or buy 750.00 shafts for 5 tons and chances are, wont break them without a 75+ inch tire and some SERIOUS abuse.

Oh, and Ric, I wasn't trying to offend you bro, sorry if I did.

You are better off with the 2.5 tons, they are upgradable to be stronger than the 5 tons, weigh less, and there is actually good aftermarket support.
Rockwell ARB 5 Tons...

Some 5 tons come stock with air locking diffs, although they are considered 7 ton axles, they are the same besides the air locker & the shafts are a tad bigger, doubled splined i believe. Don't hold me to that for sure though. Before you drop 10k into 2.5 tons for a MUD TRUCK ONLY...2k into 5 tons and your bomb proof XD
Plenty of aftermarket 5 ton parts silly!

Those are the ARB 5 tons. They aren't really considered 7 tons though. Shafts, joints, outers are beefed up real nice and the shafts are double splined for the ARB locker and the guy on Pirate that has them on his BKO hasn't broken them yet

We run a set of 5 tons on a 95 F350 with a 7.3 PS with injectors, programmer, bigger turbo, ungodly amounts of torque. It was running 65 inch R2's but he could not keep it above ground and had to go to 1480 u joints so they would stop breaking. We run 2.5 tons all the time with 54's without breaking because boggers and mickey thompsons are not aggressive enough to really break them.

A stock 7.3 would turn 65s just fine 1480 seems real small for a 5 ton....

It's going to be a very slow process, I'm broke!

Here's a couple for you....

A few pics of the Rocks I picked up, squeezed the one under the rear, long way to go before it actually gets bolted in. The rear springs are just sitting there, only mounted at the front hanger. The rear hanger and shackle is off the frame so I can flip them and drop the mounts down. Gotta sell some of my old parts and things to get more $$$ I sold the 8.8" rear today, going to list the TTB parts on Ebay probably. Selling some of my other toys as well.

Nice. I was nearly done with a Bronco on 2.5 tons, then started switching to 5 tons, and decided i hate the idea of only wheeling in mud 4 days a year. In the process of finding a nice jeep to throw some mildly built 2.5 tons under and some 49" Iroks :) Anything less then a rockwell is just weak :p lol GL!!!

Sounds cool.

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to start de-brakeing the rear.

Bronco Info: 88 EB custom dents, and rust.

Do you have to do any frame strengthening of any sort, or extra cross members?

Depends on how rough your going to be, and what size tire. For mud, and his size truck, doubtful. Car crushing or jumping, a subframe will be in order. Most people don't need subframes, but use them to help mount the t-case(s) and ladder bar\4 link bars.

Just for a referance, here's the BKO over at Pirate I've been talking about. He got it on 5 ton ARB Rockwells and in this thread he's ditching the frame and going all out for structure.
