79 f250 "build"

im not sure if i shared this truck with you guys or not. while cruising CL for parts i came across this truck. he was willing to part it out but i thought it looked too nice to part it so i bought the whole thing for 1500 bucks. it wasn't running at the time and that was just fine with me. its pretty rust free for where i live so the price wasn't really crazy. and it also has a dana 60 up front which pretty much made the price a steal for around here. that was his asking price, i didnt even try to haggle with him since i knew what i was getting, i dont really like to do that if the guys asking price is fair.

anyway, the truck has a 300 and the guy said " it just started smoking one day" not very much help but oh well. he had already pulled the head off the motor and when i looked i didn't see any visible damage. i checked the heads for cracks or bad valve seats but didnt see any. so i took a gamble and bought a head gasket and a valve cover gasket and put it back together. well she started up but something obviously very wrong. the tail pipe looked like a garden hose with the amount of water coming out of the tail pipe. so i took it back apart and saw what i missed the first time. a GIANT crack in #5. im not sure how the hell i missed it the first time other then its on the front of the cyl so when you are looking at it fromt he front of the truck you dont see it.

so i hoped on CL and found a motor over in NJ who turned out to be a member here. i saw the motor run then we ripped it out the truck. i was going to put new seals in this motor but when we tore it down it was clear i wasnt putting this motor in my truck with out a full rebuild. it had a few rod bearings that were loose, which i couldnt hear knocking when it was running but they were there. i started pricing out my options and by the time i got everything machined and all the parts i would need the price tag quickly climbed. i found on ebay a reman motor for a grand which seemed like a really good deal considering id be damn close to that by the time i rebuilt the other one and got it all together so i bought it. it showed up friday.

anyway, enough heres the pics of the truck

hauled her home with the 350

sitting in the yard a month or so before i got to her

as she is now

i picked up a set of used 33s for 200 bucks to put on it since the ones on it now are about bald

pulled the motor

big ass crack

new motor waiting

Nice score! You don't find trucks that rust free around me so i'm very jealous! What are your plans for the build? I was just wondering why you are going through all the engine hassles with the 300 and not going V-8 swap? Of all the pick up's i've ever had (about 10), my 74' F250 supercab was my all time favorite, even over my 08' Z71 Silverado! Those trucks just have so much personality and put a big smile on your face every time you drive them. Good luck with the build.

its rare you find them like this here for that price too thats why i jumped on it. im keeping it a 300 because they are awesome engines. plenty of low end power. im adding a 4bbl carb and intake along with efi manifolds to wake it up a bit. this really isn't so much a build as it is more of a "rescue" i suppose lol. its just going to be a driver i add small things here and there to improve it. i cant really dive into this until my highboy is done.

Nice score that's for sure, especially the dana. 6's are cool too, not usually expected.

the roll bar went to the scrap yard. theres no such thing as a 79 highboy. any 250 from 67-77.5 is a highboy.

that is incorrect

the only year that was ever considered a high boy when this phrase was first coined by the magazines was 1977 model year as that is when the frame/running gear redesign took place 1977.5 thus the new better and lower design chassis came to be 77.5-79 model years thus early on you would gt the old outdated tall chassis from ford when you bought the new model year those who waited got the all new updated lower chassis
with all the better stuff married Tcase integeral power steering hipinion front axle in frame fuel tanks and the goofy front crossmember. but now there was two distinctly different trucks on the lot one that sat taller then the other thus the phrase highboy and lowboy came to be

Ford never called it highboy or lowboy they simply used serial numbers to determine what truck you had

the aftermarket parts house adopted the term highboy/lowboy phrase

1976 and older were simply called F250 4x4 as they were all the same basic frame from 1959 - early 1977 only moderate upgrades throughout that time span

i know everything you just said. everyone every where calls 67-77.5s 3/4 tons highboys. there was no such thing as a "low boy" in those years.

basically if it has a divorced t case, front cross member, and 34 inch rear frame rail spacing its a highboy. i have one, i know

I want the airplane to sit in my front yard. It will give my wife something else to raise hell about, maybe she will leave!

I have one I know

just because everyone calls them highboys doesn't change the fact that they were simply called ford 3/4 4x4s until 1977

I had one guy tell my my 79 crewcab dually was a 79 highboy since it was said it must be true

but since lemmings follow the crowd and "you have one" go ahead and keep spewing out the info

and since the general crowd dictates what is what around here in my neck of the woods the 77.5-79 were called lowboys
which is the same slang as the early 77 being called a highboy
and it is exactly that slang terms

Peace out
