Do brake boosters normally make noise?

I've heard brake boosters hiss when they are going bad, but to what degree?

Do they normally make some type of noise when you press the brakes?
Or is any type of hissing at all a sign they're going out?

Thanks

a quiet "whoosh" is normal. any more than that and it's probably on its way out.

Okay, thanks. I wasn't sure if any noise was bad, since I was hearing some. But, it's more like a quiet 'woosh'.

you shouldn't be able to hear it with the radio on or while driving when you step on the brake.

if it is "whooshing" all the time then it is shot.

if it just does a whoosh when you hit the brakes and the surroundings are very quiet then you're fine.

The booster was already bad in my '85 when I bought it. I had to stand on the brakes to stop, but it hissed loudly as soon as you would touch the brake pedal and would continue to hiss until you let off of the pedal. You will know it's bad when you hear it.

Thanks for the replies. Mine makes a little noise, but it's very quiet. I just wanted to be sure it was normal since I'll be doing a brake job sometime soon.

So, will a bad booster make a hard pedal or soft pedal?

Cause i have a kinda loud whooosh and a soft brake pedal, but just got the vehicle and dont know the history. Thanks.

Depends on how "bad" the booster. If the diaphragm just has a small leak/hole/tear it will still provide boost, but the noise will be "air" or "vacuum" escaping. Once the thing is totally shot it will not provide any boost at all, just like when you move a car without the engine started and have not vacuum left and have to stomp on the brakes with much effort.

must have been air, a quick bleeding and they are 10 times better.

Back to this.

Turns out my brake booster was bad (noise got progressively worse and the braking power was fading quickly) so I replaced it.

However, now, whenever I let off the brake, there's a slight air hissing noise. (I really only hear it when the engine's off because it's pretty quiet). Kinda like the sound you get when you have a pin prick hole in an air mattress. You can hear it, but you can't exactly tell where it's coming from.

If I press on the brake, it goes away. If I pull on the brake pedal with my foot, it goes away.

I don't think this is normal, but is it something I should worry about? If so, I'll take it back and swap it out under warranty, but don't want to mess with the whole ordeal if it's no big deal.

mine was hissing - but once I rebuilt the rear brakes and installed a braided brake line it went away....

How would that affect the brake booster?

Either way though, my brakes are relatively new. Rears are about a year old, fronts, maybe four or five.
