Towing with a 351 Powered F-350

I'm looking into buying a 1995 F-350 crew cab 8ft bed powered by a 351, ZF-5 and is 4x4. I want to tow my Bronco on a 22ft or so car trailer up to Rousch creek and places like it. How well do you think the 351 would do? Has anybody here towed with one set up like this?

Its not the best. The ZF5 makes it a little more bearable because the gears are a little closer. Even if it has 3.55 rears, it should do fine. You won't be passing people with it but it should hold the speed limit in the mountains.

i could only imagine how suck that would be. i wouldnt wana tow with my 460 crew cab yet alone one with a small block.

I've had no issues towing a loaded 20 foot car trailer with many 5.8L powered trucks and vans. Been doing it for over 10 years. I currently tow it with an E250 cargo van with a 5.8L. I've hauled a lot of F250 and F350 trucks and haven't had any issues holding highway speeds.

I've hauled more vehicles then some towing companies!

But I'm in Minnesota. So we have hills but not really any mountain passes.

Hell I pulled my trailer for 4 years with a light duty 87 F250 with a 302/NP435. Never had a single issue getting any load moving! Didn't have any issues keeping most loads moving either. When the load weights starting getting around 10,000+ pounds I'd have to down shift to 3rd gear on the hills. But the 302 liked to rev so no issues there.

It will do it, but don't expect much for mileage. I had one of that vintage, but it was an F-250 ext. cab 2wd. I took one long trip towing a 26 ft. camper and averaged about 8 mpg. Most of that was at 5,000 ft + elevation, though.

Depending on what the speed limit is....

Even if all you can do is 30 up the hills it will still get you there.

This reminds me from when I was a kid (and I've told this on chat a few times), we had a 71 F350 Crewcab Camper Special with a deluxe Kit camper on it (was 4' longer than the bed and had frame extensions to support it, as well as a king sized overcab bed). According to Dad, it had a 390-6v, and going down the highway (70 MPH back then) it got 8 MPG...climbing uphill, it got 8 MPG...rolling downhill, with the wind at its back, you guessed it-8 MPG!

sounds familiar....only we got 7. The 5.8 will do it, been there before I got the diesel. sure it was slower in the hills than some, but it always got me and the load to where it needed to.

I tried towing mine to Paragon back in the day with a 95 F350 w/ 351/E4OD, and it couldnt pull the hills in NJ w/o struggling. I turned around & drove home, unloaded, and drove the bronco there instead. i honestly dont think i would have made it all the way to Paragon before the trans gave out. I ended up trading it in for my current 96 powerstroke

My old 87 F-350 351w did alright pulling and that was a c-6 with 4:10's it just didn't have alot of top end 65mph was almost 3000rpm, but you could load it up pretty good and get on down the road and it didn't have a monthly payment and that made it more desirable.

I think my 351 is underpowered when the trucks empty towing nothing! I dread when my poor Centurion gets loaded up to go up into Maine hauling four-wheelers or snow mobiles! Its got 4.10s, 35s and one tons, and underpowered! It does ok empty, but the poor E4OD downshifts into it and out of OD way more than Id like it to! Its craving some 12V power under the hood!

There is a huge difference between a ZF 5sp and the E4OD equipped truck. My current van has the E4OD. I hate that transmission! I hate towing with automatics period.

I haul many loads of scrap metal that are much heavier then a Bronco and don't have any issues with pulling power. The old roller cam 351 has plenty of power to spare.

it will do it , just do a good tune up and dont expect to win a race, i use to tow with a , s/c long bed same setup 351/zf5 i did some exhaust,intake lil odds and ends and changed the gears out for some 4.30s towed like a champ.

Good revs are key to keeping one with a 5.8 happy on the road with a load behind it. You'll be able to watch the gas gage go down I was in the 8-10 mpg range loaded with a carbed 5.8 but that was a 2wd model on 10ply highway tires.

Bronco Info: 1990 F150 with 78 Bronco suspension and running gear
I use a 2wd crew cab 8' bed F350 with a 5.8/e4od and 4.10 gears as occasional driver/ tow rig for 20' tri-axle trailer. I live in the mountains in West Virginia, and have no problems. The e4od sucks, but you don't have that problem. You won't win a street race, or pass many gas stations, but should be just fine. The sixlitre tuneup, exhaust and intake and e-fans did seem to help my 5.8 a little bit tho.
