What type of oil in a 1978 c6?

Hi,
Do i need a type F oil or dexronIII in a C6??
I used the search fonction, i almost always find the answers i need but not this time...
An old guy at work told me that it need type F, Ford=type F.
The Napa store dosent have any pint of type F in stock.
I must be surely for car older than my bronco (1978).

I would agree with the type F, its what is in my '78.
I got it from a farm supply store

Yes type F, try a different store you shouldn't had any problems finding this fluid.

And it's Fluid not oil if you ask for it.

Unless the trans has been rebuilt; usually a rebuilt will use modern internals (friction material) and then require Dextron or something equal.

I completly forgot to check on the dipstick,
I need cj fluid, after some reading i can replace it with dextron-mercon II

Stick with Type F. Ford still produces it, and Ford doesn't recommend Mercon for transmissions built for F.

This is incomplete, but it seems to suggest that C6s used F until '81.
