Under valve cover inspection and no heat
I'm going to pulling my valve covers because the gaskets are cracked and leaking a bit. I'm just wondering what I should have a look at as long as I have them off.
Secondly my heat doesn't seem to want to get warm. The fan is blowing fine and all but not much warmer then outside ever gets going even after driving around for 30 minutes. The temp gauge gets to the middle but I thought I read those were dummied up just as the oil pressure gauge was.

For the heat issue: Try reverse flushing the heater core, if that doesn't work, the heater core might be plugged. (This is assuming that the coolant is full.)
The temperature gauge is an analog device, it changes resistance as the temperature of the coolant changes. So it is NOT like the oil pressure sender, which is just a switch that closes at about 5-7 pounds of oil pressure. For the valve covers: Look at the valve stem seals, the oil drain back holes, spin the pushrods to see if any are bent (if the engine has been running fine, you probably don't have any bent pushrods). Check/replace the PCV valve grommet, the PCV valve should be a fairly tight fit to prevent leakage. I'm sure there's more that others will add.

Sounds like a coolant flush is about due and make sure to purge the coolant system of air, if air is in trapped in the system this can cause air pockets in heater core giving you the heating grief. You can you use a coolant purge tool or burp the thermostat hope that helps. And as mike350 stated be sure to check the stem seals and if your up to the work change them they are cheap and well worth your time.

Should I try replacing the thermostat or go right for the flush?

im sure flushing it is a good idea... ESPECIALLY if it has had water in the system and caused a bunch of rust and mineral deposits all over everything.
although, usually weak heater means thermostat is stuck open, wrong temperature, or missing. i'd make sure it has the correct 190 degree thermostat in it. (just put in a new one) oh, and get a decent quality thermostat. they're not expensive and it's a critical part. cheap ones can cause problems.

Feel the heater hoses and see if one is hotter than the other once the engine is/should be warmed up. If one is way hotter than the other, then it sounds like the heater core is plugged.

STANT all the way!!!! do NOT get a "fail-safe" stat. what they do is when they fail, they fail open so it doesn't overheat the engine. problem with them is they fail open ALL THE TIME. they SUCK ass at life. otherwise all good advice.
by the way mr.pyro, did you get my PM about the fuel filter? |
