did my elec ingnition box take a dump?
![]() Today while finishing up the drivers door rehab and topping off fluids I found something that has me puzzled!,, on the drivers side inner fender is an Aluminum colored ( gray) box about 6"x6" and 2" tall looks like the back side may have been epoxy sealed and what I found was melted black crusty funk just near it,, The truck starts and runs fine, I did not want to unbolt it until I got a heads up from you all ! could this have been from a bad one the PO replaced? help a brother out please!!

If the "snot/insulation" is going away, then replace it. When my '77 Ranchero's box started going out intermittently, my uncle {a machanic at Ford} said that it aint a bad idea to keep an extra one of these in the vehicle.

I like to get Standard Motor Products, had real good luck with their stuff. :) YMMV? What color is the plastic wire holder underneath yours? Is it the original? Yellow or Blue? The truck could have a problem that will also kill the new module so that's why the instructions includes a detailed electrical testing procedure using a volt/ohmmeter. Don't skip any of those tests. You might find the whole problem's the pickup coil inside the distributor. xD So go through that {test procedure} first. ;) Alvin in AZ |

Mine's a Standard Motor Products. The original Motorcraft went to acting up in'79. I'm thinking I might have had something to do with killing it. I had a bad battery and was nursing it along for a month or so because I didn't feel like I had the $25 for a new one at the time. So instead bought a $109 ignition module instead! LOL :) Either way the generation mine is ('75 F150) dies in a different way than the newer gens do, mine acts like the ignition ballast resistor is open or intermittently high resistant. Starts and runs fine while the starter is engaged and dies or sorta half-assed runs or runs fine when the starter circuit is allowed to re-open. Seen several other dieing Dyna-Sparks of my generation with the same symptoms over on FTE. :) So the SMP Blue Streak I installed in '79 -hiccuped-one-time and I got on Rockauto.com right away and bought a new one, keeping the old BS from '79 as a spare. My '75 F150 has never broke down and left me stranded -anywhere-ever-! The IM didn't neither BTW! :) Alvin in AZ |
