np 208 stripped selector threads

I stupidly cross threaded the threaded shaft where the linkage bolts to my transfer case. How had is this to replace? Could I just thread again only a little smaller? I have never opened a transfer case

how bad are the threads? possibility of rethreading it with a die? if its jsut the first few threads and theres enough you might be able to jsut cut/file the bad threads off, clean the end and put together line normal. replacing it might require dissassembling it but idk i never tried

run the correct size tap through it first (get the size off your bolt) then try again. If it does not have enough threads left to hold well either drill and tap one size larger or go find a helicoil kit and rethread to original size. pretty easy job

edit* just realized you said threaded shaft..... like previously stated try to run the correct die on it. otherwise unless you can turn it down to get a smaller size die on it you may have to swap it out

If you want to run a die on it to clean the threads, DON'T use a normal thread-cutting die. Either use a split die (back-die) that will pass over the bad threads, clamp onto good threads, and then run backward off the stud to clean the damage off, OR use a thread-restoring die.

But those t-cases are inexpensive if you can find them in your local JYs, so finding a replacement should be fairly easy. You'll learn how to replace it when you open the JY case, and that's pretty easy, too.

I found a local transfer case np 208 for $75. I think I wil buy this and swap tc verse fixing the old one. Split die are $100 per set or $20 for a single. This way I will parts laying around for an np208.

make sure the transfer case is fixed yoke and not slip yoke or else you will need a slipyoke eliminator

I have a slip yoke transfer case. Is this the right transfer case and drive shaft for my truck? Should I get my part and switch to a fixed yoke?

ALL Bronco t-cases have a fixed rear yoke. Rebuild the good t-case with the Bronco parts.
