78-79 soft top
Like other 78/79 owners I've been looking around for a soft top for several years. Today I stumbled across this site:
www.can-back.com and talked to a guy named Brian. Can-back has been around for awhile and had a pretty good reputation I think. I've seen one or two and they looked good, not cheap though. Anyway, the company has been sold/bought and the new owners are working on prototypes in conjunction with a new fabric vendor. They plan to start producing tops for current production vehicles and then move on to older vehicles. Where they start with older vehicles may be influenced by what market they think they will have. At best it will be a while before anything is made for the 78/79's but it needs to start somewhere! If you are interested in one, please go to the site and fill out the "Status Notification List" form to let them know you are interested. Please spread the word. Admins feel free to move this to another forum if this is the wrong one.

Somethings fishy here????
I knew I saw this exact same post here on the forum on 12-6. I'm wondering if Gub Ni's and hcyoung's account has been hacked? That post just seems out of place for Gub Ni. Quote:

I dunno. if you go over to BOB cyoung comes back and replies to people. I think if any hacking went on it was Gub Ni's account.

soft top - Not Hacking
Quote:
Anyway, I had this communication with can-back and it seems legit so I was trying to post it in all reputable web sites I know of. Gubni saw my post over on NC4x4 and added the information over here since I couldn't make my own posts. I hope you guys will check the site, fill out the form and maybe get them to move the 78/79 up on the priority list. Hey, I think with this post I may be over the threshold to make my own posts! Thanks, Charles

No I wasn't kidding when I said hacked. When you see 2 posts with the same material just about word for word from 2 different members it made me wonder. Your post on this was deleted because you put it in a tech thread.
You can make all the new threads/posts you want in the noobie tech section regardless of post count. |

I never knew about the noob deal either, but I was interested in the 78/79 softop anywho, so I'll dump my question here.
![]() i've been watching a 93 Bronco eddie bauer that has no eng/trans but has a tan Kayline softop included with it. I was wondering if they could be made to fit a 78/79 or is it way too much work. the top has one cut in a plastic side window, but is complete and looks ok. anybody experienced with this?

I contacted Soft Topper and they didn't want to bother based on limited inquiries. I asked them several times to tell me how many they would need to sell in order to bring the price point in line with the 80 & up models. They couldn't even answer a simple question like that. Poor business in my opinion.

ya, I'd pay TOP dollar for a Sklyer tonneau top for a 78/79. spent hours reading all the threads on them and searching for a used one for sale.
I saw a few threads on other forums that they were going to start producing again last year, but my investigation didn't go anywhere. How often do they show up for sale? I need one this summer. |

Funny thing this should come up right now...
Now that winter's finally let go of MN, I've been planning to do a soft top build- I was just taking some measurements yesterday. I lurk more than post around here, but I'm no stranger to sewing heavy leather; vinyl is a breeze. I'll be working on a slim, low profile frame that bolts to the stock topper locations, so screwing snaps into the body panels won't be necessary. The rib reinforcements would be removable.
If you guys have any interest, I'll try to take a lot of pix and post to a DIY thread. Of course, any input or clever ideas are appreciated. |
