FI 460 AC Compressor Elimination
Guys and gals,
I have a FI 460 from an 89 F350 in my 78. I eliminated the AC when I did the swap, but left the compressor in. Its starting to squeal and the end is in site. Its a dual belt system and as it turns out that they don't make an elimination pulley for this. Looks like I probably need to eliminate it and replace it with a shorter belt. Anyone have any info on this? Belt size, PNs, experiences to share? Thanks all...

Should be the same compressor used on the 5.0/5.8 so whatever eliminator that works in those should work on the 460.

I wonder if they just dont list it and if it is as SomeDude says, the same as the AC compressor for the 302 and 351. I thought that would be the case when I went in looking for the part, thats why I was surprised when they told me it wasnt available. Maybe I just need to buy one for a 302/351 and see if it works...

I have an '89 FI 460 in my '78 as well. The eliminator bracket came from a fellow FSB guy (Miexter) years ago. I believe it came from a 5.8. From my recolection, that bracket is universal between years/ motors. Couldn't get a pic, my phone battery is dead.....

There should be something available. Surely not all EFI 460 vehicles had AC from the factory, so there would be a bracket/tensioner instead of the compressor.

Thanks guys. Makes sense and is what I suspected. I will order one as InfoFord posted and give it a run. I am confident it will work...

you may need to use the steering A/C belt from a 96 460 if that pulley on that eliminator is smaller dia then your A/C pump pulley

Got the eliminator. Pulley on it is 5.25". Pulley on AC compressor is 6". I bought the 96 belt in case that difference in size warrants a smaller belt. Not sure if there is enough flex in the tension pulley to make up for the slightly smaller pulley or not...

glad to work with me on it. One minute use on a belt doesn't hurt it, was what they were thinking. ----------------------------------- Just to get an A/C equipped vehicle going all it needs is a clutch bearing. They're relatively cheap and easy to replace. The compressor can be dead but still carry a belt quiet as anything with a new clutch bearing. ;) 5106 bearing is used in both my '75 and '91. Anyway, cool thread. :) Alvin in AZ |
