Headliner
My headliner is shedding like an old hound dog. I was wondering if anyone here has done a custom headliner?
Im thinking about stripping the old foam/fabric pad. THen laying up some new foam, then covering it all in Embossed leather or vinyl Crocodile. Something like this...

Yeah, I did it. Scraping the old foam off was tedious and a mess. Spray alot of glue, and take your time.

I did this in a 95 i had a few years ago. Very simple to do. Just take your time, make sure you get all the old foam off and use enough glue but lay it down as even as possible.

Ive done custom headliners before. I usually use tweed. One nice touch is carving foam into shapes and glue them down first. Could do a kicking bronco,5.8 what ever you wish.

What kind of foam would you use to carve in?

I ripped out a headliner in the JY, and the foam was so brittle it was comming off in my hands. A wire brush should make quick work of it.

I went to joannes fabrics and got 1/2 thick high density foam. Its carvable and shapes nicely. Dont leave harsh edeges keep them rounded or the fabric wont stick right. And keep the details to a minimum to many intricate shapes in a small space will leave you with unsatifactory results. So try to keep them large in size and simple. Last one i did was an eagle talon and it was simple script that said talon. IIRC i used 3m super 77 spray adhesive or lock tite. Try to find a spray that is clear in color so it wont bleed through into the fabric. Spray the headliner and spray the fabric. Then walk away for a minute or two come back and start spreading. Flat liners are easy as pie, shaped ones take more time.

Im thinking about getting a CNC router table. I bet I could make some killer crap for headliners with that.

I used to make parts for R/C Planes in my 2nd bedroom. Mostly Molding fiberglass and CF. Made enough doing that to pay for a couple of years of college.

Dont over think it. All it needs to be is a design in foam. Nothing extravagant, just a raised layer of foam.

I recently re-did my headliner using a real tree style camo fabric that I got from Wally World and 3M adhesive. Came out nice too. There is a pretty detailed thread floating around somewhere of a guy who covers the whole thing step by step..need to snap some pics of mine..

When I did mine, I added in an over head console out of an explorer. Just something for you to think about.
