400 vs. 460?

Thinking of a new engine for the 250.

One would be a built 400, the other a 460 PI...

Pros and cons.

400:

PROS:

Can just use the old block.
Decent on gas.
Bolts right up.
No height issues with new cab.
Low cost.

CONS:

Power compared to 460.
Torque compared to 460.
Guzzles gas.
Accesories.

460:

PROS:

Power.
Torque.
Accesories.

CONS:

Gas.
Sheer size.
Modifiying the frame mounts and other accs.

Go with the 460
The gas milage will be the same if you do the speed limit

I'm looking more at off-road mileage...

Going the speed limit in Jax is kind of hard anyways...

Yeah, but who drives a big block and goes the speed limit?

Ok, I drive the speed limit, but I feel the need to open it up and let it go from time to time...then I remember why it's parked.

If built right, people swear by the 400 over a 460. But, the one thing that stands out to me is the "accessories," as you put it. The fact is the aftermarket has no love for a 400. That makes up my mind right there.

Amen to that!!!! Hard enough to decipher the codes of the 50 different engines ford made, much less find aftermarket for one they stopped making around 80-82.

460 is only about 100lbs heavier.....what can you drop to balance you out? Could make the arguement that the larger, torquier, more powerful V8 doesn't work as hard to propel you to the speed limit, so it might not be a noticeable change in your mileage

Are there even any perfomance heads for the 400?

I'm thinking more along the lines of a 460 PI with a lifetime warrenty, less hassle.

In my past 460 swaps I found I got better milege than the 351M/400 motors I had. This could be due to worn out motors, who knows. I do know that the 460 swaps I had done which totaled 3 in my younger days were well worth the effort. I also firmly believe that a 460 will out live a 351M/400 any day of the week, refering to mileage.

Just swap out the heavy cast iron 460 intake and you will loose a fair amount of weight.

I also don't like it when the two different motors are compare. Most people always say the 400 can be built to be as good as the 460. In stock form the 460 is king, in my mind it is. When building a motor for performance things can change with the amount of money spent on the build and how it's built. Put the same money and parts in to a 460 and I'm sure the 460 will still be on top.

Can you tell I'm a 460 man!

I build 400s and have for years. There are a LOT of aftermarket pieces available and a good body of knowledge on how to go about it. Given that the 400 is 'Cleveland -based' and is the longest stroke V8 Ford made..there is a lot of potential in that engine. I have also done the 429/460 swap..the last one in my '78 F250. My .02 is, if you can get your hands on a 'good' 460 from the late 60's/early 70s you are probably better off going that route for an F250.

Go with an engine you like, from what I have been reading the 351M/400 does have its good points.

As far as the aftermarket situation goes, yours is still better than an old Pinto motor with a hair dryer attatched. A limited aftermarket just means that you have to be more resourceful.

I have had two trucks and one bronco (all 1978 or 79) with the 400. I have also owned one 78 two wheel drive with the 460.

I rebuilt one 400. The performance improved, but nothing to get too excited about. It still wasn't as good as the stock 460 in the pickup.
I also replaced a tired 400 in my 78 bronco with a stock 1970 429 with a 2 barrel carb two years ago. I will never mess with rebuilding a 351/400 ever again. If I am going to pay the money I am putting the big block in. If my next vehicle has the 400 in it I will leave it until it needs rebuilt, but I won't put a dime into rebuilding one.
Of course, that is just my opinion.

I've seen some 400's built into pretty impressive motors, but when you consider the $:HP ratio that pretty much settles it. There's no arguing with the M block guys, but when I'm at the mud drags running my 460 I notice they aren't there. Hmmm.
I'd do the 460 swap into the F250 since you already have a D60 front/rear. It would hold up to the improved power, but I'd strongly recommend a fresh set of GOOD (Spicer) ujoints. Good luck.

No contest from me on that point. I build a mean 400 for my rock-crawling trail rigs..some I have built have over 500 ft-lbs of torque at a measly 3500 rpm. But what do we race?...a 429 SCJ (D00 heads)..a D0VE-C 429 and a 460 with D0VE-C heads (and a lil 671 on top for extra measure). They all have their place.
