Good Deal on a Tailgate? Your Call.

Setting up a play-date to look at an '89 tailgate with zero dents, near-perfect trim panel (possibly aftermarket based on how clean it looks in the pics, but not sure), and intact glass. Guy says TG is complete, in great shape, and everything works. Wants $200. Is this a good deal?

Just wondering what the market, in general, looks like for this particular part right now. Junk yards I've been hitting up want $300-$400 for a complete TG in decent shape, but when you start looking at stuff that's 30 years old they know they've got you in a bit of a bind. It's not like I'm asking them pricing on a headlight for a 2003 Accord. Only a couple actually had TG's with the glass still intact.

If mine was missing the tailgate I'd probably bite at that price. I mean, you're counting the tailgate, wiring, regulator, motor, glass, weatherstripping, trim. I don't know how much they go for at the local JY though, so maybe that's high.

On car-part it looks like a rough shell (dents, rust) is going for 100-200.

That's how it is here. JY guy tells you at check-out, "Yeah... just the tailgate is $200. Glass is an extra $50, the motor's $20, the regulator hardware's another $40, the latches and switches are another $30....."

Before you know it, you've got a $350 tailgate that you were okay with paying $200 for. Now you kinda feel like you got ripped off because when you casually asked how much a tailgate is, when you paid the entry fee, they told you $200.

tailgate panel alone goes for that with no damage.

a new tailgate shell is also a good investment. A "Gordan body panels" one i swapped on in the past was well made. Plus I had the option of painting the inside/outside before installation. And coating the lower inner lip in bedliner to help drain any water intrusion out through the drains that are above the bottom lip of the shell. Biggest pita was drilling the holes for the tailgate panel for the swap. If you can swing new and have the patience to swap the parts it's well worth it also. Finding a mint used unit is almost impossible.

Wow. Pricing seems to vary quite a bit. The TG the guy is selling is right along the lines of the ones in the pics in miesk's post. Paint is peeling and faded in some areas, but there are no dents and the trim panel is "flawless." Again, I think the trim panel is a re-pop. Funny thing is, I'm not even keeping the trim panel. I want to remove it and build a TG with the FORD lettering spliced in from the F-series tailgates. I've seen it done on here by someone else and thought it was really cool.

I guess I could sell the trim panel and recoup some funds that way.

I just need another TG because the PO of my BKO must've backed into a parking pylon, or something, at some point and destroyed the inner frame of the shell and tweaked the entire TG. I tried doing some body work to save the shell a while back, but when I realized the inner framework was jacked I decided I need a whole new TG.

I'm personally a fan of what @Scoop did with his 78. I believe he cut out an early Bronco FORD lettering and welded it into his 78 tailgate.

Check for rust inside the TG along the bottom. It may not show up on the outside but could be damaging some of the bracing and torsion spring attachment.

That's very close to what I'm going to try. The panels I'm looking at have that same type of stamped lettering, but "FORD" spans the entire panel instead of being tucked into the corner. I think the '80's F-series trucks had the type I'm thinking of. Either way that looks really cool. I've always thought the brushed aluminum trim panel looked like an afterthought. It's not really well integrated and it doesn't match anything else on the BKO. Not even the grille. There's not a single other piece of brushed aluminum anywhere on the vehicle.

Thanks for all the tips and feedback guys. Looks like most feel it to be a good deal. I guess we'll see when I take a look in-person.

Got to the guy's tow yard today and had a gander at the TG. I was disappointed, at first, because he had the thing at the bottom of a trailer buried under 2 other truck tailgates, 2 hoods, and a friggin' door off some new truck. Literally, it was at the bottom of the pile. I told him, "Well, that'll have to be another $50 off the price if I'm gonna take it. If it's too beat up when we get it out of there, I don't even want it. That's a terrible place for it." He agreed and said his yard guy must've put it there a while back.

We moved everything off it, dragged it out and I inspected it. The trim panel has a ding in it with a good scratch and there are several other minor dents in the outer skin from the PO. However, I think for $150 it's leaps-and-bounds ahead of the TG that's on my BKO now. Glass is good-to-go, hardware/linkages/handle are all in great shape, and just some very minor surface rust where the hinges bolt on. However, it does not have the main access plate that screws to the inside face. What does everyone think now? Still a good deal, or would you have beaten him up a little more on price? Not that it matters now, but just for fun. Pic:



A little love with a welder/body-work/paint and it'll be a streamlined butterfly.

Thanks all. Got to work on it a little today. Gutted it, removed the trim panel and started welding up holes. I'm a little conflicted about whether I actually want to cut it up and splice in that FORD lettering or not. I think I might just wait until a later time after I've let the idea marinate for while. Another pic:



I think I'll just turn this into a "progress" thread. Maybe it'll keep me motivated to stay on top of this thing. I have car parts for several vehicles that need to start getting put on before I get much older.

So, I decided that when I die and the BKO has to be sold I don't want to the next guy to have to deal with a hacked up tailgate. I've spent most of my past vehicle fab on street cars cutting and modifying. Now, I regret many of the "mods" I did to my Maverick and kinda wish I hadn't gotten all trigger happy with the plasma torch and welder when I was younger as I have more moderate tastes now. Therefore, I had to come up with an idea of how to get the "FORD" lettering I wanted without having to cut/splice/weld. Also, I wanted something unique and the lettering splice has already been done by several people.

As a result, I took elements from the original "BRONCO" font, the "RAPTOR" font, and the newer F-series fonts to try to create a more modern spin on a classic icon. I found a chunk of ~8 gauge 7075 T6 aluminum at the shop and went to town with CAD and the plasma table. Here's what I came up with for a test fit:





I have to put a slight radius on the FORD lettering to hug the tailgate panel a little tighter, but the badging will be installed with 3M Press-In-Place moulding tape after the TG is painted. Then, I plan on shooting some black Plastidip over all the lettering. The SVT logo is just for fun because I want to try to get people doing a double-take when they see it.

If the next owner of my BKO doesn't like the badging, he/she can simply remove it and there will have been no irreversible modification done.
