Aaaaand... It looks like this truck is originally from Minnesooooota. It has a Twin Cities DSO and the dealer script on the fender has North Dakota on it. I'm assuming ordered through Minnesota and then eventually shipped on over to a dealership in ND. Neato.

Now I have a Texas Bronco (Dallas DSO), a Washington F100 (Seattle DSO), and a Minnesota F150 (Twin Cities DSO). I need to check the vin tag on the door sitting in my backyard from my old F150. I can't believe I never bothered to look that one up through all the years I owned it (20+). Looks like it's a SLC DSO, that makes sense considering where it's lived it's life since I've had it (Idaho, Utah).

The guy I bought this truck from said it was driven here from Monroe, Washington. Apparently he's a western Washington guy like I am. I think he said he's from Puyallup.

Sounds like it was a fairly loaded truck for a ranger. Mine (78 ranger 150) doesnt have cruise, though I believe it does have ac.

Good score!

I have grand plans for mine, but the time and funds arent there. Flatbed, lift, tall skinny pizza cutter tires, heads, and no paint. Ironically, the paint on mine buffs right out to a nice shiney jade... where theres still paint haha

That might be where the XLT comes into play with this being a Ranger XLT. I'm not 100% sure how all the optioning worked back then. I was surprised seeing all the options as this is my first higher trimmed truck of this gen. Everything I've had so far has been a Custom.

I made a stop at the car wash before unloading it. The fit was tight, but it made it through and out the other side when I was done.

Mmmmm.

Here's my one-man method of getting the truck off the dolly. I put the Bronco behind it facing the other way, hooked up a come along to the hitches, and then used the two flat tires (after I filled them with air) as a way of stopping the truck from hitting the Bronco by placing them a few feet behind the truck right behind the wheels. Was there a better way? I don't know, I used what I had in the middle of the night. It worked.

And there she sits, waiting for me. I tried to find a couple of replacement tires, but people don't seem to hold onto tires for 15" rims. It turns out after I aired up the tires that they held enough air once I got home. They were hissing after I got them up to 35 psi, so I thought I was sol with them.

If I had an unregistered, uninsured motor vehicle on the street here, it would have been towed, impounded and I would have been fined in less than an hour.

I pulled the plugs. I'd say they are the worst plugs I've ever had the pleasure of removing from an engine. They came out with little effort though, so that was nice. I didn't even have a problem getting the plug out from right under the heater box. The two plugs closest to the front of the truck, 1 and 5, are the worst two and have basically no gap due to carbon. They're about as foul as @351w500 's jokes.

Here's 5, 6, 7, and 8 from left to right.

4, 3, 2, 1 from left to right.

I shot some penetrant/lubricant into the cylinders and let it sit for a while as I checked some other stuff out, then I put a socket on the crank and turned the engine over a few times. I watched the harmonic balancer spin all the way around about 3-4 times and called it good.

I was a bit confused after I opened the air cleaner. The filter looks brand new. Like... brand brand new. The engine oil looks fairly fresh too, so maybe the oil and filter were changed shortly before the truck was parked.

I had to attack cylinder 4 from underneath the truck in order to squirt my lube into the spark plug hole. When I got down to get into position I noticed this happening. This is gonna suck when it comes time to removing the door panels.

I'm going to work on a couple more things on this truck, then it's time to move vehicles around so I can put the topper back on the Bronco. Yay.

Looking at the deposit buildup and it looks to be ash based, so more than likely it's oil as it's too dark to be fuel based. I'm guessing you have bad valve seals and/or guides,(or maybe even rings). Curious to see if it smoke blue when you first start it up. It probably will the first time since you lubed the cylinders, but that should burn off fairly quickly.

It's alive! ALIVE!

I didn't see any smoke, but it blew a bunch of shit, literally, out both tailpipes when it first started up.

Oh, it also caught on fire about 30 seconds into it, so I had to run over and grab my hose and give it a good soak.

As far as getting this truck running, I replaced the bat tree, the plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, and put a gallon of gas in the tank. I think it runs pretty decent considering I haven't touched that carb yet or actually gone through the fuel system. I put it in gear to see what would happen and it engaged in reverse and drive. The brakes work when I hit the pedal, so it's looking pretty good so far. That's when I noticed the smoke coming from under the hood, so I shut it down. Apparently hay is flammable....
