Bought motor and trans got a ambulance for free

This year like any other year I was searching the good old sale ads only this time I was looking for a diesel engine to transplant in a 86 suburban I purchased last year.

As luck would have it the classified ad Gods think that thou is righteous and worthy of a good deal.

I bought a 2010 Chevy Express 3500 ambulance that had been layed over in a accident that or it was listening for running buffalo. We live in the midwest so I really am thinking the 1st one. I got it way cheaper than I ever really though I could. Had a wrecker deliver it to the house and started making calls and planning the motor swap until.... Monica my wife kinda fell in love with it and Dad's eyes lit up like I'd just told him I hit the lottery. They're not good influencers, but hey what can i do?

After making some calls on the dead set don't get all comfortable with it cause I'm doing this motor swap thing I found the engine harness rework was gonna cost nearly $1k and then I had to figure out all the mounts and drive shafts and hoses and coolers. I'm at the point of maybe the ambulance gone RV wouldn't be so bad after all and just sell the burb. The big problems were the ambulance had a crease in the box on the passenger side and a salvage title. The crease was the 1st Hurdle mostly because the box is aluminium and the main bent piece is a extrusion that is made just for that box. I made a call to a place that sells parts for these things and much to my surprise they sold me a 7'section shipped for $90. That put the nail in the coffin or patient in under the knife so to speak.

Yo huggy,
Instead of calling 911 next time, I told my much-better-half to contact you for a lift to the hospital or nearest campground. 😎

Ha I knew you guys would approve. I keep thinking it would be super cool as a 4x4, but with all the stuff I have going on im lucky to get it finished off for camping this month. I bought the silly thing in February and just a couple weeks ago got the title converted to rebuilt.

I may be able to work on the whole 4x4 thing later next year. I mean it would be such a waste to have the duramax up there and only 2 wheels driving it.

So anyways repairing the box was a bit of a task as you could imagine but at least there wasn't any rust since the whole box is constructed of aluminium. Click image for larger version

Once that was all finished I was confident we could move forward with the intended new purpose. I started by adding a waste 28 gallon water tank and then a 21 gallon fresh water tank.

Then came getting it fitted like a camper and adding in new counter tips a bar type sink with running water and 12v/120v circuit center that also charges the batteries when plugged in to shore power.

It's been a busy year I bought this, a new bike, took my folks to the beach in SC for their 50th and Monica and I's 25th. Then I came home and the new motorcycle bug hit Monica so now we have a pair of Hondas. Bought a brand new 2018 Africa twin Adventure Sport and a 2016 CB500X or as we like to call it the Halfrica twin. Click image for larger version

I didn't really see myself as a Chevy guy but looking at my driveway you'd wonder what happened to me. I just tell everyone don't worry the Chevys are just too cheap for me not to buy and you can't be cheap and be buying expensive stuff and hold that title.

Van men unite! I have a 99 e250 that's been sorta set up for camping. The junkyard provided most of it.

It's pretty rusty, but I'm still considering a 4x4 and manual trans swap. It's a 4.2 v6, so any SBF trans will bolt up!

I'd love a diesel ambulance or cab n chassis to make into a flatbed.

Check out U-Joint Offrod for tips and ideas.

Also, Etrailer.com is great for RV parts to modify for your use.

Here's my wagon...

And my project thread on it

I have a 1991 F350 4x4 Ambo that used to be in Antarctica. Slowly getting it road friendly (turbo, hydroboost brakes, rear camera, reverse shackle swap, interior swap, lowered lift and tires from 40 to 37’s, etc) and then I will move onto making the partially gutted box more camper friendly.

There is a 8 lug front axle sitting under a 90ish suburban at the Muncie U-Pull in KC. Seems D60 sized and has the passenger side pumpkin. If you really feel the itch that is... lol Indiana isn't THAT far.

If anyone in the PNW has this itch to scratch, I know someone who's selling their ambulance, as they are no longer able to work. Late model Ford Power Stroke, new alternators, new batteries, excellent shape, she is asking $12K, so if someone's interested, PM me and I'll let her know, get the two of you in touch.
