Another what is this...?

So while tearing my rig apart i noticed this box under my driver seat... I run the number thru Google and it says ECM (engine control module)? Then goes into a description that it may need to be programmed by a professional or it may not start my car because of anti theft device... I thought my rig was too old to have anti theft lock out.
Since my ignition system was changed to a universal GM ignition system does this mean this box does nothing now? Worried about disconnecting it when I get to removing the front seats for my interior resto.

Your rig had EEC III/Variable Venturi carburetion from the factory. I am familiar with EEC III, as I had an '83 Colony Park wagon with EEC III/Central Fuel Injection. So no, if your rig has an HEI-style dizzy, it also likely has a different carb that's not a feedback unit. That means, chuck it, or at least put it up on OfferUp, see if someone has an '82 with the same setup (I believe they were only used on the 351W) and needs a computer.

Yeah, the CFI worked pretty well, but the FB carb (I think it was a 2150 for 49-state, or a 7200 for Cali, emissions) just wasn't all that great. And if the feedback stepper motor quit, the carb would just meter at that setting. Full-on lean, flush the bowl rich, or anywhere in between.

Under the seat is interesting. In my 85 with a 300, it's up under the dash, kind of above the transfer case shifter.

Yeah, EECIII was great, for 1982. After 30 years, it's pretty well tuckered out. Mine is still in there, with I think 2 random wires hooked to it. It was switched to a 4bbl Holley and a modified point distributor (pertronix ignitor). It was originally a single barrel carb! On 300 cubic inches!? Come on!! I later switched to a quickfuel Holley and a GM style HEI distributor. The HEI starts it almost instantly.

Right @BigBlue 94 I thought under the seat it might have been an old power seat motor.
Pretty sure that GM style HEI is what they put on my rig when they removed the EECIII

If I get another '83 Panther platform car, such as a wagon or Mark VI, I'll check it out. I have three CFI units, three computers, two MAP/BARO sensors, and a 302 dizzy. That'll awaken just about any non-runner.
