Deleted Post sugestion

I have two recomendations concerning deleting posts.

In the tech section, there is a thread that says:

"In an effort to make the tech write ups more user friendly any and all posts that are not directly related to the actual tech write up can and most likely will be deleted, so any "atta boy" "good job" or "damn I need to do that" all though we are sure appreciated, are not tech related".

I agree with this policy and I think it could be used in the build section also. There is allot of "attaboys" that really make reading a build a long task. Now I know some people like hearing that and complain about the deletions.

What could be done is leave all posts as they are for fixed amount of time. Say 30 days. That would give the OP time to read them and respond if they choose. But the comment and response would disappear after 30 days. Lets face it, nobody is going to read that stuff a year later. (or five)

Now having said that, I have also seen a mod delete a post that is a question about the subject. The explaination givin was that they could PM the OP this question. I do not understand this policy. If someone has a question, why not answer it in public one time? I mean, if one person has that question, maybe many more will have the same question. It doesnt make since for the OP to answer it over and over. And of course some OP's leave the site and are not available to answer years later.

1st suggestion requires entirely to much effort to actually keep track of. We can't automate an item like that and expecting every thread to be as closely monitored as your suggestion would require is not very likely.

2nd suggestion... as noted, I tend to agree.

Thank you for your input and have a nice day.

I have another forum suggestion.. somewhat unrelated

another forum i read, has "thumbs up" (and thumbs down) for every post. that way, when you read a post you agree with, you can click thumbs up, it gives the guy "credibility +1" (shows up in his info same as post count) and lets others know he is a contributing forum member.

when you post say, a really good picture in the hottie thread, you get a bunch of thumbs up for it.. so its like a reward.....

for an exampe look at how it's set up on this forum:
http://forum.ubnt.com

anyway.. its a feature i like.. if this forum software supports it :)

When I said 30 days, I didn't mean exactly 30 days. I realize that would require allot of work. But it wouldn't matter if it was 45, 60 or a year for that matter. Just so it was up for at least 30 days. So any time a mod was "cruising" a thread and found a "that's cool" post, he only needs to check the date. If it was longer than 30 days. Gone. If not, let it be. He could make a note to get it later if he chooses. But it's not like it is so important to get rid of it right on time.

I understand you guys are not getting paid. So I wouldn't expect you to suddenly go through all the build threads. But when you feel like it, just pick a popular one and pull the unnecessary posts. I enjoy some of those old builds, but it is tiresome going through 20 pages when only two posts are updates on any one page.

The other possibility would be to let the OP delete posts in his build thread.

I think it would come down to whoever does the programming/it operation for the website...

for instance, it would need a "tag for removal" button on the post, so that when an OP saw it and clicked, it would wait until the post was 60 days old (from the time it was written, not from the time he tagged it) then it would automatically delete.

that would be pretty cool.

well, since I'm not one of the more tech. savvy guys on the staff... I don't handle those threads at all.
That being the case... I'll let the guys who handle those areas respond for themselves.

I've already had to remove 90% of my old postings here, thanks to a nasty custody battle (which, I lost in a big way). I'll pass on sharing my life with a billion people I could give a rats ass about.
I moved around the entire country growing up and when I've tried social media, I'm buried under a landslide of people wanting to "friend" or "like" or whatever with me, to the point of madness. I share a lot of myself on here... but privacy is a good thing.

I've had this thought as well. There's really no need to post a simple "Yeah, what he said." Just a click of approval would be good. We have the same thing on the Marlin owners site. It's a "Thank" instead of a "Like," but it's the same function.

yea... same on all the snowmobile forums I've checked out. Guess I just don't get the point. Sounds to "needy" for me... but whatever floats yer boat.

dang dude... don't go gettin' all butthurt over it. I just don't like the mentality and to be honest, I've tried it and didn't like it. I've lost a few other forums/friends I used to hang with to that place and I harbor ill will.
