Thanks! That view prompted me to.. er... suggest that a "his & hers" pair would be awesome. She didn't buy it. I'll keep trying.

So you say there might be a build sheet under carpet. Might just have to look for that on #2. Looks to have 95% oe on it, including the trailer brake setup beside hood latch and possibly an oe trailer hitch. The two in the driveway looks good. Been there done that .

Can't afford to do it. I have to get one of the two running and get the other one gone. Somebody else can have the pleasure... I really do wish I could. I'll start a "Save the Bronco Fund" and see how many people help!

I've read on here several times that Ford stuck the build sheets underneath the carpet either under one of the front seats or under the center console. I'm really hoping to find it. I don't see much evidence of water ingression in there so I have my fingers crossed. We'll find out this weekend! I'm taking the front seats out and swapping them for the ones from the black one.

You think that trailer brake controller is O.E.? I know I had one on my first truck ('78 F-250 XLT SuperCab Camper Special Viking longboat sunuvabitch), but as my parents were the 2nd owners and I was the 3rd, I don't know if it was something added by the 1st owner. It looks just like that one did, though. I'll take a pic when I get home and post it here. I keep asking how to tell whether this really is a Trailer Special and what constitutes a Trailer Special but I haven't heard anything yet. Google isn't giving me the answers I want this time.

Thank you! That is my favorite generation of the trucks, too. None of my neighbors have come over to talk about the trucks. I think I need a new neighborhood, because I sure as hell would stop to talk about those.

I did find portions of my build sheet under the rubber mat under the front seat. bUT Most of it had deteriorated from getting wet.

BTW, nice dilema you have - which one to keep?!

The brake controller in my parts truck(the trailer special) has a brake line going into the back of the trailer brake controller. I am almost 100% sure it is factory, since the truck came from the original family that bought it new. They drove it for almost 10 years befor they put a snow plow on it. Then I picked up right after the son rebuilt the entire drivetrain but got a new plow truck and no longer wanted "Rusty". I will be taking pics and I will post one up here and see if it looks like yours or any others.

Also Can't you hide one of the Broncos in the back yard?? Sure is nice to have your own parts truck around...

Looks very similar to mine. What year is the parts truck?

So -- lots more pics today:

My favorite one so far...

No catalyst. Muahahahaha! So I won't have to worry about the smog Nazi coming to get me.

Wonder what this used to say...? It's on the air cleaner lid.

You may notice I've cleaned about 1/3 of the cover so far. It was pretty old & nasty stuff, but a rag and some 0000 steel wool are taking care of that.

The base of the air cleaner...

Why the hell is there a lock on the left fender?

Have virtually no brakes on the truck right now. Pedal goes to the floor and barely stops the truck at idle. Popped the cover off the Master Cylinder and check this gasket out...

What the hell is up with the color of the brake fluid? Looks like an Arnold Palmer -- two different fluids sort of layered in there. Guessing it's water ingression since the truck has lived its life in Big Bear, CA.

I pulled the front wheels and rotors off. Pads look good. Rotors are clean, smooth and not run out too bad. (No pics, though... ) Brake lines show their age and need to be replaced, but don't appear to bulge when the brake pedal is depressed.

Didn't have time to pull the rear drums apart yet (niece's birthday party today! ) but I'll check them tomorrow. If I still can't figure out where the problem is, I'll bleed the system next since I clearly need to do it anyway. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Also managed to remove the leftover scrap of the right side exhaust system and identified why the truck runs so rough and doesn't like to start... the PO had disconnected the plug wire on cylinder 1 when he installed the new electric fuel pump (which I intend to remove). Funny how much better it runs now and it doesn't even need starter fluid anymore. Whattya know?

Tomorrow - Rear Brakes and maybe a brake bleed if I can sucker somebody into pushing a brake pedal for an hour. I pay in beer. Any takers?

Keep both trucks, one in good shape and the other one for the parts.

I'm in no hurry to dump the '79 ... I'm using some components from it to complete the '78 (hence the title of the thread), but the '79 will still be a viable project truck for somebody else when I'm done. Still has a good 400M and the interior is rust free. Won't take much determination for someone to make it a trail rig.

My parts truck is also a 78 Ranger XLT T.S.

If you are up to it I would swap 79 driveshafts, yokes and flanges over to the 78 since they are all bigger...

Just park the 79 in the back yard and plant flowers in the back! Tell the wife and who ever else it's your new flower pot

The lock on the fender might have been for an alarm.
