'78 Build Thread - Take Two to Make One

I sent these photos to my wife as I was headed home with my "new" Bronco on the trailer.

Her reply:

"Woo! That's ugly! But you'll make it purr..."

She's right. If you've been following my other build thread, you already know that I saved my first Bronco from the crusher. The trouble is, it's missing so much stuff that's needed to make a daily driver that I'd have to spend a fortune in parts. It's been ridden hard and put away wet - which is fine (or even awesome?) for a toy, but I want a DD first. And since I won't be driving the one from the junkyard, it's not really fair to keep that thread going.

So, I picked this ugly duckling up from a guy in Big Bear Lake - and this one came with PARTS... lots of parts. I'll post pics of everything later on, but I'm now the proud owner of two early FSBs. The '79 will be offered up in the Classified section of this site shortly and this one will be my new mule.

He runs. He needs a throttle return spring (throttle pedal stays where you last put it - up or down), a manifold-back exhaust system and a brake job before he's ready for the street. Those three things will need to happen within the next two weeks.

So, tag along for the ride if you like. I'm picture-happy, so there will be lots more to look at. I think I can FINALLY get my Bronco on the road just in time to take my wifey out for Valentine's Day.

Incidentally, the SPARE parts list includes:

- A 351M short block (complete with engine stand)
- Two C-6 transmissions - one without the tailshaft extension and one with it
- PS Pump
- AC Compressor
- EGR plate
- 2-bbl Motorcraft carb
- 9-inch rear end with coil spring mounts
- Miscellaneous smog, A/C, wiring & other components

This is in addition to what's already in the truck.

Thanks for the compliment. The paint scheme has grown on me, too, but I think I'm still going to the two-tone that I had in mind before I ever bought a Bronco. I know this isn't Free Wheelin' but the stripes are kinda cool.

Look what I discovered when I got home:

Some quick shots of the interior. Apparently the PO was a dog lover... there's hair EVERYWHERE. Noticed a few odds and ends, too... some brackets mounted to the dash between the dash pad and the defroster vents... screws in the roof where I'm guessing a light bar was installed in the past... a very odd (and sorta cool) CB setup where the receiver is mounted between the GT bar supports and the handset plugs into the dash... the spare tire mount is intact.

Roof screws:

Front passenger compartment (passenger seat isn't mounted):

Original headliner is still looking decent:

GT bar:

Rear bench:

I have another shift boot for the t-case. I'll swipe that from the junkyard project.

The one that really makes me chuckle is the Trailer Special without the hitch. The stripes look cool in a "hey, at least I tried" sort of way. They are certainly different. The mismatched wheels & tires are what's driving me crazy at the moment. Can't wait to get those 35" BFGs on it.

Yeah, I guess it could be. I'm waiting for Ranger429 to poke his head in here and tell me what would actually qualify it as a Trailer Special. I'm thinking somebody found a badge and slapped it on the back, but maybe you're right.

It does have the quad shock mount up front (something missing on the junkyard project) and it has a trailer brake controller on the dash between the steering wheel and the driver's door. Honestly I wouldn't even know where to look to see if it's a true Trailer Special.

My parts Bronco is a 78 with the trailer package and mine still has the hitch, and badge. Not sure how its hanging onto the rusted out tailgate. But it hasn't fallen off in the 5 years I have owned it. lol

Nice find by the way!!

Thank you! I'm all kinds of stoked about it. So what makes it a Trailer Special? Upgraded brakes? Tow hitch (now gone)?

Far as I know it is just the hitch, wiring and trailer brakes. Where is Ranger429 when you need him??

Exactly what I was thinking. That drop dead gorgeous, black and silver truck he restored is a Trailer Special.

Thank you. It really is almost rust free despite having lived above the timberline. There's just a bit of surface rust in the driver's door jamb - only it's not where you'd expect. It's at the top and it's very minor. The only other spot is on the driver's quarter panel and it, too, is minor.

Seats are out of the junkyard project and will be in the other truck tomorrow. Also, since the carpet looks to be original (fingers crossed) I might be able to find the build sheet under the carpet. Can't wait to have a look!
