Yet another 408 build begins

Started by purchasing a used motor/tranny/xfrcase thru CL. Supposedly from a 96 pickup, it turned out to be a non-roller block w/speed density. Did get a spare E4OD, transfer case is manual shift. Not too bad for $500, lots of spare parts.

Got a set of GT40 heads from an Explorer and a new set of Pace shorty headers. Pictures of both here http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/...d.php?t=217018

Some fun parts showed up yesterday - the 408 stroker kit. Its from AD Performance, Scat crank and rods with Probe pistons.

Please PLEASE do not use the stock 5.8L upper for a 408 build. Buy the GT lower! Better power, more upper intake options too. Remember after the E7 heads the next bottleneck on the 351W is the intake. If you already have GT40 heads, get them ported and polished. No sense in building a beast shortblock to only bottle it up from poor flowing heads and intake.

A few more goodies have arrived: Oil pump drive and mounting studs, harmonic balancer bolts with square drive and main stud kit. Now I can take the block to the machine shop.

IMG_1662 by Carl Campbell, on Flickr

I understand where you guys are coming from, but I actually want to keep it 'bottled up' a bit at first. The rest of the drive line has 230k miles too, so I want to get it running and see how the tranny does. I fully intend to go bigger heads, intake, etc. at a later date.
I am doing some port work on the GT40 heads and will post pics when they're done.
If the tranny looks like its doing ok after I get it running, my next purchase will be an Edelbrock truck intake.

Get the eddie truck intake now. If you're spending money on ARP bolts, porting, and a stroker kit, put your money where you will feel it the most. You wont regret it but should you, I'll buy it immediately from you.

I'm concerned about a snow ball effect - bigger intake, then it will need bigger injectors, then bigger throttle body, then bigger mass air meter...

I need to take this in managable chunks and the bottom end is first as its getting ready spit the rods out now.

I promise I'll buy an intake.

Subscribed. I am looking into the Probe Ind. 408W kit as well. my only complaint is that I do not want to bore a block out to 4.030" unless it needs it. If I can get a block that can live with a light honing like my 302 got then I would rather save the cylinder wall thickness for later should I need to rebuild down the line. I also have my eye on a set of roller conversion lifters on Ebay. Guy said he ran them for a while and then went to a solid roller cam. They last pretty well and can be torn down and cleaned if one is ticking (did it on the factory ones in my 302). What is the dish size of your pistons. I have not looked a lot into the compression numbers to calculate my preferred head and piston sizes.

awesome build! How much do you anticipate having in the entire build once its in the truck, and tuned?
I think SeattleFSB ended up with about 15k in his.

+1 on the snowballing thing though. Bigger engine, more power, kills transmission, fix transmission, breaks driveshaft, fix driveshaft, breaks rear end, fix rear end, Brakes explode. lol its a never ending cycle it seems.

Pistons are 24cc dish, supposed to 9.5 compression with 64cc heads.
I'm planning on a Howard's retrofit roller kit with link bar hydraulic roller lifters. Actually cheaper than stock replacement roller can and lifters.
I haven't totaled up costs yet, but I'll will...

You wouldnt by chance have a green tailgate on that thing would you? Ive seen 3 blue/tan EB Broncos here in Orlando, including mine, that have a green tailgate.

No, no green tailgate. I wouldn't drive it that far right now, its knocking too bad I stick around Merritt Island / Cocoa.

The retrofit lifters cost a fair bit more than stock lifters from what I have seen. But its about the same as the increase in price for a roller ready block. I also agree with your choice of limiting your top end until you get your drivetrain fixed up to withstand it. If you need any help with this I will be in Florida starting in March and can help with a lot of stuff.

lots of guys in the mustang community have had decent success with the typhoon brand of intakes. they have the equivilant to the edelbrock versions we use and are consderablly cheaper.

i agree though keeping it bottled up for the time being.

94 5.8/E4OD Edelbrock efi intake, jba headers, transgo shift kit. 6" PC stage II, 4.88 gears, front Aussie. Warn HS9500, custom bumper and sliders. RedHead steering and TieRod flip.

Do they have an equivalent to the Edelbrock truck fuel injected intake? I am definitely staying fuel injected with the stock configuration (if not stock components).

Looking at Summit, the Typhoon is maybe $100 less than the Edelbrock, but is made for Mustangs so single blade throttle body on the side rather than dual at the front.
