Nolapilot's Overpriced 94 4BT Bronco

Figured it was time to start a build thread. As my friend says, for the amount of money I put into this I could have probably bought a nice f250. But eh? Thats no fun. So far I don't know how much i've spent, but I'm waiting till I'm finished to total that up. I have a feeling it will give me a heart attack....

This has been a work in progress since Feb 2013.

I've wanted a bronco for wayyyyyy to long. So when I came home from working a year in Alaska, I took to craigslist and found this for 1000 bucks in Gulfport, MS in Feb 2013....

No rust, No major dents, and drove it all the way to New Orleans. PERFECT.

Then the fun began.....

First thing, get it down to the frame!

Decided to get it powdercoated. Was considering going with the typical black, but decided to be a little different and go with a silver vein.

Next was the decision as to what to do with this thing...

And instead, decided to just all around replace it with a 4BT.

I decided to keep the E4OD. It actually was just finished being rebuilt this past week. I've got the Baumann US shift controller for it, and Purchased an adapter plate and flexplate from diesel conversions. I've also got a winters shifter.

Here's how she sits now...

30HP Injectiors from DAP, Piston lift pump upgrade, Denny T stage 1, 3200 RPM spring, all new gaskets and fuel lines, harmonic balancer, ford 6.0 starter, valve job and cleaned up the head, ARP bolts and studs, Waterpump and belt tensioner changed... Basically any life limited part changed out. it needed some love.

I also called Dawna and Ken at Autoworld Conversions (Cumminsdieselrepowers). They have everything, and I mean everything to make this job easier. Engine mounts, A/C bracket, Tach Kit (which works with the stock dash tach), tensioner, dual pulley, etc etc. I called them, told them what I wanted to put my 4bt into, and they already knew exactly what was needed. GREAT people.

Begin assembling the frame.

New fuel tank for diesel, JBG Shocks (front and rear). 1.5" lift shocks and coils in the front. New JBG leaf springs. when the Dana 44 is back on its getting new ball joints and such up front. In the back Is a Eaton Elocker, brand new ford racing 3.55 ring/pinion and bought both axel rebuild kits from JBG. the Dana 44 has a new Auburn gear LS.

YET TO COME:
Cosmetic:
-New paint
-soft top
-All chrome bumpers
-Older style chrome mirrors
(My goal is to elimitate ALL plastic... I hate plastic!)
-New windshield
-Headlight housings (Possibly HIDs)
-Chrome grille
-Light bar
-2" Body lift (to help the 4bt fit easier)

Interior
-Either Vinyl floor or just bedline the entire thing
-black and dark grey interior plastics and seat covers

Utility
-smittybilt 9.5k winch
-Digital guard Dawg keyless system
-Manual Hubs
-MAYBE a roll cage

Essential
-All New fuel lines
-Havent decided on mechanical or Efan
-Intercooler
-Dual Battery Setup
-Daystar poly body bushings

Oh... and these of course. 5 cooper s/t 33x12.50 on 15" American racing

AND

Man, that took a while. I'm sure theres a thing or 2 I've forgotten, I'll update as I remember.

So.... does this count as a "Go big or go home" yet? My wallet sure thinks it does.

Definitely watching your build. My dad and I are doing a frame up on our '77 F100 so I'm interested in what you learn taking on such a detail oriented endeavor. Looks good thus far!

Anyone have a suggestion on what to use for the floor? It's definitely not getting carpet. I want to bed line it and maybe put some drain plugs on the floor, but I worry about heat with that. My other option then would be to just get a vinyl kit. I would love to use something like a Bed liner though all the way from the tailgate to the pedals.

Man you dove right in on this one. The silve vein looks damn good, nice choice. As for the floor route. There are a lot of choices out there. Lizard skin, line-x, dupli-color's armour liner.

The frame looks amazing. Thats exactly what I need to do to my frame. Ive gotten most everything else done but the cosmetics. I need to do the frame and rebuild and powder coat the axles and paint the body and im done with mine. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours is looking.

Are you going back with the stock 8.8 rear end? Im not familiar with what torque output you will get from the 4BT with your mods on it. I suppose if built right they could go quite a bit over the stock 4BT.

You could get a vinyl kit for the front half and liner for the bed of the bronco, best of both worlds

Yeah I'm keeping the stock axles. This is one reason I went with a 4bt over the 6bt. If you go with a 6bt you almost have to upgrade to the f250 stuff. Jowens, it may seem like a lot of mods, but in the end it's still a VE rotary pump. People have put 4bts in explorers. I've been talking to a lot of these conversion companies before I decided on what to keep and what to change though. I'm sure they're tired of taking my calls, sitting around talking to each other like "He's calling again... Think he'll actually buy something this time or just trying to use us for advice again? Ugh that guy"... Yeahhhh I'm probably that guy. The cosmetics are what I'm afraid of. Seems that's the expensive part haha.

I'll be sure to post some more when I get back home. I'm currently on hitch right now. The shifter will be interesting, but I think I've done most of my homework on it. The guys at Baumann literally have a full wire harness to just plug into the e4od and to the TPS. Seems like it'll be somewhat painless, or so they say.... There's also an option with this transmission controller to setup paddle shifters. However it would have been a lot cheaper to just pickup a ZF and mount it up to the existing bell house adapter/flywheel (4bts usually come with a t19 on it already). That being said if anyone wants a cummins to ford manual bell house adapter and flywheel and starter, feel free to let me know. I had to buy an adapter and flexplate for the e4od. I spent another 1200 on the adapter and flexplate, 100 on the starter, and 600 on the transmission controller just to be able to go to an automatic. But hey gotta build it how you want it if you're going to come this far with it right?

Cosmetic are always the expensive part. I used to worry about that alot. Then I remembered, every time I got a shiny new car or truck, it wasnt long before some ass wipe plowed into me or opened a door into the side at walmart, or I just bumped into something. I'm almost thankful mine is not so shiny. But I do wish my hood and roof didnt look like ass.

So I've got some updates:

Got the D44 back on

I now pronounce you, Engine and Transmission. The transmission and transfer case were all rebuilt locally. Also had them put on a TQ from a diesel E4od as well for the lower stall speed.

This is an E4od, Using a "Diesel Conversion Specialist" Adapter and flex plate, and a ford 6.0 Starter mounted up to the 4bt.

I simply CANNOT wait to finally get it in and hear it fire up....

Sorry man But I was never in the Military. I went to Afghanistan as a DoD Civillian pilot. Flew CH46's on a NATO contract. If you ever were stationed around KAF, BAF, or Shank, you probably know who we were.

Yeah I was stationed at KAF, our TF had 4 MH-47s, and 6 AH-64D's. Only flew at night except for a few remain over day missions in the horn. Talk about pilots not getting enough down time. I only uploaded maps to the PMCA cards for the aircraft, went to the FARP's and talked on 4 radios at once all night lol.

Can't wait to see that 4BT go in!

is that your home shop or somewhere you work? Thats nice to have access to the lift and all that other shop stuff. Makes things so much easier.

If I had access to a lift like that I would powder coat my frame too. Just costs way to much to have a shop take all that apart. Besides i would much rather put it all back together myself anyway so I know everything is done right and not half ass rigged.

Knowing me, then I would have to blast and paint the underside of the truck and line-x it all. Cant go that far apart and not take care of everything at once.

Man, you're doing exactly what I want to do (as soon as I pay off the wife's new car). Where did you buy the 4BT? What did it come out of? Any idea how many miles were on it? Why didn't you do a full overhaul?
