17's make perfect sense when running a tire 37" or larger IMO. It's just less sidewall, but still plenty of sidewally. Why do you need a 44" tire flopping around on tiny rims? It's all about proportion I suppose.
Yes, 17's have the safety bead altho some report they don't hold as well as 15" safety beads (I have no idea why or if this is even true).
