I have an odd question, I bought a 78 Bronco and haven't changed the position of the 4x4 shifter.

I cannot tell which gear it is in, and the previous owner had never moved it so the question I have is: I assume it slides to the right or left then up and down.

Example Diagram: (how I assume it is)

So my question is should I attempt to shift it while in park? or in drive with the brakes on? and have I assumed correctly that it slides right then up and down or does it just go up and down.

If need be I can grab pictures, I couldnt find a shifting diagram online anywhere.

It only moves forward and back there is no side to side movement. Don't try and shift it into 4low while moving and depending on how finicky your linkage and T-case are you might have to be in park or neutral. You can shift between 2H and 4H on the fly just dont use 4L or 4H on high traction surfaces.
The T-case shift pattern for a np 205 is this.

Most came with a np 205 but some came with a np 203 or 208? and the pattern will be different for these.
