1995 302 5 speed as donor for a 1996 e40d 351

Hello all, I’ve searched to see if anyone has done this, to no avail. I have a 1996 with a 351, I just found a 1995 302 5 speed bronco with new pressure plate, clutch, and slave cylinder for a hell of a deal! I’ve seen that the transmission won’t be strong enough behind the 351, let alone the 408 stroker I’ll be dropping in it. My question is, will the 95 work as a donor for most of the parts I’ll need? Pedals, steering column, brackets(?) and anything else. If these will simply bolt right up it would be easier for me to just find a zf5 for sale by itself. Also, I’ve read about ecm issues with the trans swaps but haven’t seen anything very definitive. If I’m running a 408 crate with a Holley sniper efi and a zf5 trans, what issues/corrections am I looking at as far as computer goes? Any advice is much appreciated! I’m pretty determined on the 408 stroker, the manual swap I would really prefer, but don’t want to get in over my head on.

Hey,
That sounds ambitious. I took a 1996 and put proflo4 and stand alone controllers in and everything works as stock. You can do what you want all you have to do is patch what your working on into existing systems or just leave them out all together. What engine management system are you planning on using?

the crate motor that I’m looking at comes with a Holley sniper, but I’m able to get it without, and buy a different one if there is a different system that will work better.
Little additional information I’m a diesel mechanic, and have built and modified my fair share of SBC’s most being carbed, and non obd2. The more I look into swaps or even just modifications to this engine the further down a rabbit whole of problems and improbability I find myself running down. The biggest crutch seems to be the transmission (I’ve already took into account needing a built trans, looking at monster trans e4od rated at 450/900) because the trans is electronically controlled. With a sniper or other efi set up, I lose TPS for the trans, I’ve read the make a kit that kind of rigs this up, so that’s one possibility, but I’ve also seen where the trans reads vacuum for shift points, and if you put a larger cam in it, you lose vacuum and disable the transmission, so that’s another concern... for simplicity sake I’d rather just have the e4od in there, but I’m having a hard time finding definitive answers on how to make it work with even the slightest mod, let alone a whole swap. At this point I’d be happy to modify the 351 that’s in it, if I could squeeze even 80-100 extra hp out of it (not the best idea, because it’s high miles, I’m just saying I’m flexible) but everyone seems to put to issues with any supporting mods with this year truck...

TLDR: I’m getting discouraged because through all my forum searching and online reading it seems as though changing the dipstick out would require gutting the whole truck and rigging up 100 different things... Can you get power out of this OBD2 trucks without gutting everything and keeping the dash/gauges intact, and a functioning transmission? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Ok first thing anything is possible. So the only issue i see with running the sniper is that the transmission will have issues and probably not work without a stand alone controller. You could run a straight carb swap on this truck and the only thing that wont work is the speedo youll need an after market one.
There are 2 real options for stand alone controllers that work with E4od trans= the HGM controller or the US shift controller.
You wont have to gut out the pcm or ecm that are in the truck just disconnecting the harness will be fine.
The transfer case operation is a separate system all together so nothing you do to the transmission or ECM will effect its operation the button on the dash will operate the transfer case with the engine out of the car and the transmission unplugged. Its 1:30am for me right now for me so im sorry this was written so poorly. Im trying to condense 2 months of looking at wiring diagrams into a 250 word essay. 😆

Depending on the compression of the 351w you might want to just put some sweet heads on it and run a sniper or ball out on the Proflo 4 system.

This truck is difficult to mod while keeping the stock efi system. (1996)

HOLD ON are you planning on taking a manual truck and swapping it to E4od with carbed 351w? because youll need a VSS in the trans or the diff for the E4od as well as the shifter collum and the transfercase module on the passenger floorboard on the right hand side behind the panel.

Your plan is a good one. Swap the 5speed over, using the donor crossmember. Pedals and all will swap right over.

When you find a ZF5, it will directly swap in place of the M5R2 light duty unit.

Running a holley sniper and manual trans means the computer and such isnt needed except for ancillary things.

If you're doing the swap in stages (meaning, having the 351 for a while until you get to your stroker), you'd need an ECU for a manual transmission, until the engine and Sniper go in.

But as BB said, you can put the 5 speed in now, and complete the swap, work the kinks out, etc. etc. and then later when you find a ZF5, it's a direct swap. Pop the M5OD-R2 out and put the ZF5 in its place. They're the same bolt pattern and dimensions, as long as the ZF5 is for a 4x4 small block.
Doesnt the 302 use a different flywheel than the 351? Anyone know? Ive not messed with many 302s.

302 is 50oz
351w is 28oz
