My newly purchased 1996 5.8L does not have a thermactor system. I can't even find any blocked off plumbing or sensors anywhere, and no codes are in the system. It does have an idler pulley in place of the air pump. I'm wondering if some 1996 models (or others) were delivered from the factory without a thermactor system. Anyone know?

96 5.8 in F150 and Broncos didn't use it. F250HD and F350 with 5.8 did
Correct, and the HD trucks were also still Speed Density.

Mostly because they are MAF and easier to build and tune. And they arent a 302. Ill take the 300 any day over either SBF. But im not into going fast, though my 300 will push me over 90mph with no OD and 37" tires.

To the tangential comments about 302 vs 351 (vs 300) desirability... When my A/T was starting to stumble, I delved more seriously into whether I should do a M/T swap, and one of the more compelling things I ran across was some comments that the 302 is a dog with an automatic tranny behind it, but really comes to life with a manual and is thus quite competent as a truck motor.

I haven't towed any loads with the M5R2 in it to test that aspect, but I can absolutely support the claim that the tranny-motor combo is the weakness, not the motor itself, when it comes to general drive-ability. The 302 simply needs to be able to rev freely.
