Well, after my last mud run doing this to my engine and my radiator getting clogged up enough to have me overheat, I figured every little bit of cool air would help.

I sprayed out the radiator fins and thought that K&N's are such a rip off .. the filters to do a cheapo copy are $30 bucks apiece and I would need 2 ... why waste that money .. stock filters are $10 and ya only need ONE ... so I came up with this ... it ain't pretty, but for an offraod rig it doesn't have to be ... check it out :thumbup

This motor is a transplanted 302 from an F150 .. the airbox sits right on top of the valve cover .. no cool air there

Disconnect the hoses

I bought a 6' length of flexable intake hose

Cut in half and mounted the airbox

Mounted to engine intake

a bit of a stretch .. wishing I had an 8' or 10' hose to cut in half right about now

Took the cap off and spun the box around 180 degrees .. this points the intake into the corner of the fenderwell and the firewall .. pretty protected in there

Finished product with the tubes zip tied to the alternator bracket .. it ain't pretty, but it is functional and cost about $20 bucks

His is the first one that I have ever seen that had the factory airbox located in that position. I set mine up like Dustin did his. (Once again thanks for the part# dustin)

A buddy of mine swapped a 302 out of his wrecked '94 f150 into his '86 F150, and the intake was in the exact same spot Damager's was. Cant figure out why they put it there, though:shrug
If that doesnt work out for ya, id imagine the 'normal' hoses and box would work, and be just as easy to install.

yes sir :thumbup ... I haven't worked it hard offroad yet, but just driving it around it seems to be just a touch more 'crisp' on the throttle... I would have to say enough to be noticable and worth the effort :beer

Not to slag on ya Damager but from an airflow point of view the ribs on the flexable tube that you used will decrease performance

I have been thinking to make a cowl on the side of the fender and allowing it to draw outside air from there :thumbup

hold on there, your gonna turn into some ricer! it sounds like a good idea, but i dont know...... why dont you try gettin some solid piping, and drawing it back more towards the front behind your grille or something...

That is an odd place for an airbox... FORD does some strange stuff :shrug

Nice work, but I agree with these guys that some PVC would really help your airflow and also insulate the incoming air at the same time, which is what you're after anyway :thumbup

don't wanna suck water in during crossings :shrug ... that is part of the point of keeping it tucked back against the firewall :thumbup

YOu have to remember, if you put a scoop on the side for air, it can be torn off on the trail. Maybe you could make it removable or something. Just something to keep in mind.

hahaha, it would be like a cowl induction type of setup angled back towrds the rear high on the fender.. kind of like the dryer exhaust on your house kind of thing

If you can find an 88-96 bronco with the 302 the stock air hoses would work. My hoses look exactly like your old ones, but they run almost straight across to where you moved your airbox. could possibly even order from a parts shop. Might cost more, but the smoother tubes would improve airflow.
