If a 220 volt breaker is rated at 50 amps is that the total for both wires or each wire?

It's rated at 50 amps TOTAL, if you run more than 50 amps through the breaker it will blow. By saying both wires i am assuming your talking about single-phase 220.

Are you running something off one leg of the 220?

It is 50 a leg but it is not a true 50 amp. You have to derate your circuit and should not have a constant load over 80% so don't put over 40 amps on it.

Same for all breakers if your have a 20 breaker you should only have a max load of 16 amps.
