Hello,

I've read every 3G article I've come across. Now I'm doing it myself and I have a quick question.

Is there any reason I couldn't use one of the split washers from under the pulley nut to space the v-belt pulley away from the 3g case? It fits perfectly on the metal ring (bearing?) around the pulley shaft that rotates witht he shaft. The only two things I could see wrong with using it are that it is split so it isn't flat (might cause the pulley to rotate abnormally)? I would think it would get more or less compressed flat when I tighten down the nut...but I dunno. Also, it is probably thicker than the 18 gauge listed elsewhere so the nut might not go on the bolt as far.

I know it is a cheap part but I'd really like to finish this today and everybody I've called has said they don't have washers with anywhere near a 3/4" diameter. I also haven't been able to find a washer in my misc stuff that I could drill out to 3/4 without making it worthless. Anyhow, any help would be appreciated. Sorry, I know it is probably kind of a dumb question.

yeah it is needed, the pulley grinds on the case if I don't have the spacer beneath it. I looked at the bottom of the pulley and the spacer on the serpentine is a mm or 2 thicker. I guess that brings up another thing I need to think about. Whether the thicker spacer would make the v-belt not line up right...oh well. Worth a shot I guess.

Hmm...yeah my metal ring around the shaft isn't that thick. Also, I couldn't find a place around here that sells washers with that big of a hole in the center. Guess I'll just have to pray. Can't bother doing that though until I figure out why the hell the thing doesn't work (no power at all ever since I removed the old alt and yes I had the battery cable removed during the whole process).

I got mine at Home Depot in the hardware aisle in those tiny plastic drawers. Think it cost 25 cents. See how thin it needs to be ?

Any thicker and you'll need to deepen your V-belt pulley, like I did here;

This is 1/4" deeper than stock. I had a machinist deepen it on a lathe for $10.00. This allows the 3G nut to go on further.

Clear as mud ?
