I have an extra 160 amp 3G Alternator and am going to be using it for a project, The question is, Do they HAVE to spin clockwise like when they are on a vehicle or can they spin backwards and still operate properly and be expected to last like they usually do ?

The naswer is sort of no. They will stil lcharge the same, we actually test all of our alternaotrs spinning the wrong way so they will heat up quicker. And that is the problem you are going to have, it will not cool properly if you are spinning it backwards. (CCW).

However, it also depends what you are doing with it. They have alternators that are 30amps with zero cooling. You could probably get double that and a bit more from a 3G with out over heating problems. As the fans will still move some air, just not tons of it. So it will depend on your load and the rpm the alternator is going to see.
