On the top of my 5 speed the seal/bushing/thing where the shift lever goes into the transmission is leaking. I pulled it apart and the whole thing is a mess. So seeing how it is a tiny little part I went over to the local dealer to get a new one. Well it turns out that the seal and bushing and parts I would need are about $100. That is way more than I want to spend, especially for what I would be getting.

Does anyone have a busted Mazda tranny around they could sell me the part from? Has anyone else made their own bushing seal solution? I had an extra tie rod boot and jammed that on the shift lever as a short term seal but I would like something a little better.

Suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,
Tim
Hi,

It looks like I am in the same boat, funny though, i just had major overhaul on the engine and exhaust including the clutch. Used to have a major oil leak so when I replaced the oil pan and valve cover gaskets I thought I was golden...:rockon To my surprize now she drips ATF, like you described, from the top down.. at first it did not make sense until I read your post....

So, does this job require you to pull the transmission or can you do it from the top? What did you end up doing Tim? Did you ever fix this and anyone have an idea what it costs to have it fixed?

Thanks

Coool... a stupid question! LOL :)
I like those, I can answer those. ;)

Here's an M5OD-HD (ZF) tag, notice how it's "stamped"...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/BroncoZFtag.jpg

I suggest just using a rag to wipe the M5OD-R2 (Mazda) tag off.

An E4OD tag is a decal on a metal plate and will wipe off with just
a rag sometimes, let alone with carburetor or contact cleaner! :(

BTDT :/ Saved most of it but still, it sucked.

One of Ford's cheaper ideas? ;)

Big sheets of cardboard from Costco is what I like the best for
ground cover.

Happy to oblige with the easy question Alvin... ;)
Well its Friday and will have some time to crawl under there and have a look.

Good evening Hanaka,
I had the same truck you have and had the same problem once. What the cause was in my case, a tooth on the input shaft broke off and was bouncing around inside. From your description it sounds like the trans still works except for the noise. You should at least open it up to see if you can remove the broken piece before it damages anything else inside. Short of that a replacement of the shaft would be in order and if you are going to do that, might as well completely rebuild it replaceing the synchrose. Good luck.

If you are right and you rebuild don't forget to replace the synchrose...
