I have a 79 Bronco with a 400 that we are about to pull for a rebuild. We have around a $2000 budget which include machining costs. What tips and tricks do I need to know while pulling the motor and rebuilding? Also, what parts would you recommend to make good power while also getting alright gas mileage.

2000 doesnt leave much room for performance parts. My 300 was 3500 at the machine shop but i had some extras done and it completed as a short block with head installed.

My recommendation is a weiand action plus or torker 2 intake manifold, a 600 cfm 4 barrel carb, a good exhaust, and a cam with durations @.050" of 220° and lift around .500". Mill the block so the pistons are .005" in the hole at TDC. Then grab a die grinder and remove the thermactor bumps in the exhaust ports in the heads. Port match the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds/headers to the head.

This should put you north of 300 hp and allow 12 mpgs or so.
