The only difference that I can remember in the carriers is that the pre87 ones take a different size cross pin. The housing on the pre87s maynot have a place for the sensor.

Beginning in 82 it was possible to get either an 8.8 or 9, but IIRC any bronco that came from the factory with a 351W had a 9 in it (Of course Ford did alot of odd things back then so that statement may not be completely true).

Bluebronco is correct. The crosspin on the pre-87s were 3/4" and 87-newer are 7/8". I would say if you can get the tone ring off it should work, but in all honesty I would swap carriers if possible. The 87-newer are alittle stouter as far as the carrier goes. You are still going to have to make a hole in the pumpkin of the 84 housing to put the sensor in, because they did not come with any kind of speed sensor.
