hey guys this is my first post here, thanks for having me.
I tried to search but I didnt know what to punch in so I apologize in advance if this comes up alot.

Here's what I know and what happens
I drive a full size 1980 bronco with a 302, I bought it 2 weeks ago for 600 bucks. There is 173k on the truck and 20k on the rebuilt engine

The Symptoms
at freeway speeds heading up the pass (I-90 Wash. state) the bronc started to act like it was running out of gas, I call it choking around 3000 RPMS.

when in park the engine revs up well past the 3K mark, sounds and feels fine.

when driving around the neighborhood I got it to choke again right around 3k going 20-35MPH up a long steep hill but when it flatens out it seems to be okay.

also it seems to happen when its hot, or it doesnt happen when the truck is cold

Known Issues
I definatly need a new radiator it has a large hole in the bottom but it only leaks under pressure. I pulled over at least 10 times yesterday and shut it off and had to add water 3 of those times. My temp guage works and the truck thus far has not had problems staying cool.

the wiring is all goofed up under the hood, but its been running strong in similar and worse conditions for the 2 weeks Ive had it. Ive gone through and tried to do what I can with the wires that I have, just so far as to assureing good connections and what not.

My futile attempts
at first I thought it may be a vapor lock issue so I relocated the fuel line, now it doesnt touch anything, via zip ties, I deemed as a potentialy hot surface, didnt help.

I was thinking fuel filter, so I changed it out with a new one and a 2nd clear one up stream and it didnt fix anything nor have I noticed any crap in the clear one.

any way guys any suggestions would be great and thanks in advanced for the help

Check your timing. If its farting out under a load I would suspect your timing. Possibly your advance is not working?

or fuel pump.

thanks man, Im really excited about this truck. Ive never worked on my own stuff before so this is all a first:beer

anyway Im not sure about either carb or tranny, I know I dont have an AOD because of no over drive so I have been assuming a C6 or 4 but dont know how to check.

I'll go check to see if there is a model # or something on the carb

all I can see on the carb is that it's stamped motorcraft on the top and L 121 or something similar on the drivers side

probably doesnt help you much though:shrug

I had'nt thought of the timing advance, that would be a good place to start. Been out of the carb scene a little to long.
You got a service manuel yet?? Haynes or Chiltons are pretty good.... Fog

I had a similar problem on my bronco. It ran sweet till I started going up hills. Then it would bog down and die till I let off the gas. Turns out my fuel pump was leaking. Replaced the pump(on the trail no less) and she ran better then before.

Check your pump out.

Ck. your fuel pump & timing advance. The timing you can ck with a timing light just put a dab of whiteout on the line where your base timing is sposed to be set at, And rev. the engine if the advance is working the mark will go off of the scale and show back up when you let off the gas. Don't forget to see if your vaccum is hooked up right.

You got a C6 and a 2100 2 barrel motor craft. Both decent, but the carb is certainly not for hi performance.

The guys seem to be pointing you in the right direction.

also change fuel filter just to be safe.

Okay so the plan right now is to do the junkyard thing to find a radiator and fuel pump after both of those Ill try some hills again.

what kind of carb should I start looking for?

I just got a long awaited shipment from JCW complete with new exhaust, headers 2" body lift and more... :D

actually you should start looking for a Edelbrock performer manifold $129 P/N 2121 and a Holley 600 with electric choke $ around 250 Oh and in case you still have the stock one... $29 dollars will get you an Edelbrock proflo 14" round air cleaner P/n 1207.
