Last fall (Sept) The tranny went out of my 86. Couldn't get to it until this spring. So I install the tranny (aod), and it won't start. If I pour fuel into the intake, it will start and run until I quit, then dies. I replaced the high pressure fuel pump, and have fuel at the fuel rail. I pulled the wires off of the injector and put a test light to them while turning the engine over, and they are pulsing, but it won't fire a lick. I've spent the last two weekinds putting the tranny in it and spent a grand on new ultra wheels with 32 inch bfg all terrains. This is killing me!

The engine is 5.0 fuel injection, aod tranny. The bronc only has 64,000 miles on it.

I have the same problem. I got a can of ether and it starts, but stops immediately. Problem with mine is it is a wiring nightmare as they have bypassed all the realys and there are bare and stripped wires. I bought mine for $1250. I drove it home 30 miles. I washed the bottom of the engine with Gunk spray and I turned it on after about 30 minutes and it quit. She has not turned on ever since. I have replaced both ignition switches, rotor, distributor cap. The inertia switch has also been bypassed. The fuel pumps are directly wired to the fuse box. So I may just return it. Let me know what you do to get yours started. I also have fuel at the pumps, filter, fuel rails, regulator.

I did get it started! I got out the chiltons manual and checked out the wiring diagram. It showed the eec getting power from the same source as the fuel pumps- if the power source is bad, then no power to electronic engine control either. I had hot wired the fuel pumps so they would work, but I still wasn't getting power to the eec. So I started chasing wires and found a bad ground. Turned the key on, grounded the wire, and heard some relays click and the fuel pumps cycle on for a few seconds, then hit the key and it started. This is a black wire that comes out of the loom over in the alternator/battery area. I would recommend getting a chiltons or Haynes manual and try to straighten out the wiring. Its usually not as hard as it seems. Haynes seems to be easier to use, in my opinion. Let me know it you get it running.
This is my third full size bronco. When I shelled the tranny out last fall, I was pushing mud over the bumper with stock size Big O all season tires. Now I have a Brand new set of 32 inch BFG's on some sweet ultra aluminum wheels. I can't wait to get in the mud. This is mud season in sw Colorado.

And also I would appreciate a pick of your engine compartment to compare with mine. I may end up having another engine installed at the local bone yard. At least you got your started.

haha this sounds so familiar guys....haha....look at any old posts about me and my 86....we replaced the starter...solinoid (3 times) re ran all wires....big pain in the ars! ill see if i can find any of the notes i took. i fear they are packed.

If you have spark and you have fuel at the fuel rail, your missing something very small that is making a big difference.

What's your fuel pressure at the rail?

Starting fluid is torture on gasoline and diesel engines. I would try to diagnose your problem a bit further than squirting ethanol in your motor everytime you want it to start.

Do you have a mulitmeter to start checking grounds? Rust on these things is eventually going to cause a bad ground.

Psi at the rail is 40 with the pumps grounded. When trying to start it psi is about 39. I just can't figure out what is wrong.

Ok I will try this one. Also when I hook up a regular test light both wires show they have power. When I rented a test kit for injectors the light would not turn on until it would almost start. ANd yes the light would flash.

Okay guys I got her started finally. I believe the coil pack burned out. BUT, after using ether to start her, the mechanic says it lost compression for start up, so now it's hard to start. Now I will probably go buy a new engine at the local bone yard since it is cheaper. Maybe I will replace it with a Windsor. Thanks for all the help guys.
