Adding express-down to your power windows

Here's a tech article I wrote a while back for another site. I've got pictures of the express-down module (a glorified relay) that I'll dig up and post tomorrow:

This article describes how to adapt a power window to utilize the “express down” feature, whereby the window goes down fully by tapping the “down” window switch. At the end of the article is information specific to ’92-96 full-size trucks and Broncos.

A little information about the module used for this mod:
To the best of my knowledge and experience in the junkyard, these modules were only used in generation 2 Taurus/Sable vehicles. They can be found inside the driver doorskin, mounted underneath the armrest support. The Ford part number for the module is: F2DB-14B118-AB. I have heard that the dealer price for these modules is around $50, but if you grab a handful of them and tell the junkyard guy that they’re just window relays, you’ll get better treatment. If you’re cutting it out of a junkyard car, of course you want to get as much of the harness wiring as possible.

And now for the installation information:
There are five wires coming off of the express down module. They are as follows:
1 – Motor side of down wire (red)
2 – Switch side of down wire (white/black)
3 - +12V (blue/black)
4 – Up wire (yellow)
5 – Ground (black)
If you remove the module from the harness connector, you will be able to see the numbers stamped into the plastic.

For the switch to which you want to connect the module, use a meter or test light to identify:
- keyed +12V wire
- ground wire
- the wire that goes to +12V when you press “up”
- the wire that goes to +12V when you press “down”

Here are the connections that must now be made:
Use an inline spice to connect module #3 to the keyed +12V source.
Use an inline splice to connect module #4 to the “up” wire
Use an inline splice to connect module #5 to the ground
Cut the “down” wire, leaving yourself enough room to butt splice each end. Connect module #1 to the electric motor side of this wire. Connect module #2 to the switch side of this wire.

At this point, all of the electrical connections have been made. All that is left to you is to reassemble everything and fasten the module so that it doesn’t rattle.

’92-96 specific information:
Since I performed this modification to a ’92 Bronco, I can provide the wire colors for ’92-96 trucks.

Driver door panel, driver window switch:
Down: gray/black
Up: yellow
Keyed +12V: blue/black

Passenger door panel, passenger window switch:
Down: pink/yellow
Up: yellow/red
Keyed +12V: blue/black
Ground: pink/green

Dash rear window switch:
Down: purple/blue
Up: purple/green
Keyed +12V: blue/black
Ground: black

A few more things to note about trucks of these years:
The door “pockets” underneath each front switch will perfectly accommodate the control module without any extra attachment; just stuff the module underneath the switch and it won’t rattle. Likewise with the dash switch; it will go right behind the wires coming off of the headlight switch and stay put.

If you put a module on the passenger door passenger window switch, then either the driver or passenger door passenger switch will operate the passenger window with the express down feature.

On the Bronco, hooking the rear window module #3 wire to an always-on +12V source will not add this functionality to the tailgate key switch. An additional module would have to be mounted inside the tailgate on the circuit with the key.

The feature is technically called one touch down
This is $40, does 2 windows (left and right), and does one touch down and one touch up

I use it, love it
Yeah; I really wanted it on the tailgate key but didn't do it. It looks like that would have to be done inside the tailgate, but it's doable. I did it on the rear window switch for the dash and that makes things infinitely easier but it would still be nice to do it from the outside.
can it be hooked up to a alarm .. so with a push of a button it goes down or up
You'd have to rewire the window circuits so that they're always hot instead of keyed.
so ric it could be done.. cuz i was qouted like 50 bucks for one.. and they said i would need two of them... also would u have a diagram... sorry to hijack...

also..
did you find the pics of them..
No, I haven't taken pictures yet :brownbag My camera is still full from New Years Eve party pics and I haven't turned on my desktop to empty it yet... Maybe this week.

Anyway, who quoted you $50, and what was it for? If it's the relay that I described in the writeup, it should cost you $5 and will be very abundant in the junkyards. You will need one for every window that you want to hook up. I used three; one for each front window and one for the tailgate window (although the tailgate relay only works on the dash switch).

I'm not providing a wiring diagram because I can't make it any simpler than I did in the original post.
Just wanted to give this thread a nice healthy bump.

I just completed this mod for both up and down express windows on the front windows. When I get some more time I'm going to add express down to the tailgate keyswitch.

The modules are a bit bulky but you can make them fit in the door cavities. I just taped them together and placed them out of the way of the door motor. If you want to get fancy you can also make brackets for them out of relay brackets from an S10. Some dremeling required.

so this does both UP AND DOWN!?? Pretty sweet then. Been looking to add this to my BKO's window and rear tailgate.

Thanks!
It takes one module for each direction of each motor that you want to be 1-touch. My truck has 6.
Read those captions - it's logic built into the module; not a special switch.
Read em again, it tells you how they work:

It'll also work...to hold a hot feed for about 10sec after a 0.1-0.4sec hot pulse.
This means that if you run the window up or down then it works as normal, but if you quickly tap the button, it will go up/down automatically. There is no extra button, its all done with your stock door switch. Thats why theres no meniton of a 'donor switch', because there isnt one. You splice the module into the wiring inside your door, and thats it. Like Steve said, its all in the logic inside the module.
You'd have to go to a Vette forum & ask the people who know about them.

New link for them.....

A lot more money but extra feature is holding the "lock" button on your remote from outside and the window rolls down, kinda cool ;)

Ok, so this is an old thread, but hopefully you are still checking in. If you did this for both up & down, did you use 2 modules for each button (4 total in the drivers door (Right & Left side up & down)?

Great write up to the OP by the way

Thanks! I never did it for rolling them up, but you can mount the modules into the doors they'll be controlling. That makes it a lot easier to make them fit. I've done this same mod on my Excursion and it works great.
DEI sells a module to do this as well. 530T or 503T I believe. I have (2) in my rig wired with my alarm. So I can leave the windows down and when I arm the alarm, they all go up. I can remotely lower them as well!
