Ok... im so mad right now.. i think i just destroyed my something in my transmission.. :'( :'(.. welll i have a 1991 Bronco with a 5.0, Automatic... and heres what happend........

i was at a redlight behind this little honda... and he took off kinda fast so i floor it too.. and he slowed down so i took my foot of the gas and my truck started to shift.. then he sped up so i gave it some gas.. but it was still in the middle of shifting.. so it reved to about 3k - 4k rpms and went CLUNK! then my transmission started acting all funky.. it started just reving like it was in neutral.. so i pulled off check some stuff.. then got back on the road.. and now in 1st it wont shift untill like 4k + unless i take my foot of the gass (even barely pressing the gas) and also say im going 30mph for ex. when i gun it.. usually it would downshift and go to about 3k rpms now.. it downshifts... but it just reves like in neutral and goes to like 5k rpms instantly... :'( :'( so i think i might have destroyed my 2nd gear.. first i though it might be my cluyth.. but after thinking about it i dont think it is :'( im so upset right now because ive put soo much money into my truck from fixing it and upgrades... (close to $5000 now) if it is the tranny i dont know what i should do.. im stuck.. should i fix it.. or get rid of it and get another bronco... AHHHHH well any help and suggestions would me MUCH appreciated.

THANK YOU,
Luke

If you have a "OD OFF" switch on the end of the shift stalk and the light on it is flashing it is indicating codes. You can also pull codes from the ECU yourself. Chances are that will give a bunch of good info, but probably bad news.

I would try this.....first I would make dam sure the ATF is at the proper level at operating temp. Then I would disconnect the neg battery cable for like 15 min or so to reset the computer, and that may just do the trick for you. It sounds like the trans is in limp home mode.

If that does not work.....pull the codes and post them.

did you even attempt to do ANY of the above offered diagnostics offered up by the forum members??? This site offers so much info and help that I'm willing to bet your $1900 quote is FAR off from what the actual problem is.

Most of the trans shops don't want to spend the time "diagnosing", so they say "this that and the other thing is wrong and the entire unit has to be rebuilt or replaced" - this way they RAPE you with labor costs, when parts are the least of the expenses.... They would rather pull down the trans, replace everything within it, than to sit there going through all of the proper diagnositc procedures needed in order to determine the actual causes of failure (or error codes).

How long did it take them to make such a "free diagnostic" assessment?

i sat swap the damn thing with a standard, NV4500, im looking at doing it and my tanny is just fine, just my 2 cents.
holy butchered english batman! :shocked

lxr2000. if it's a C6 it will have P R N D 2 1 as the shift indicator display. the E4OD will have a button at on the dash for "OD Off". not on the end of the shifter stalk like SG said. we had a 91 with the E4OD, and the OD Off was on the dash.

i don't think you could get the AOD from 87-91. someone correct me on this if i am wrong. if you CAN get an AOD, and DO if fact have one. the shift indicator display will read P R N (D) <---over drive D 2 1.

can't help you with diagnosing your trans, but i hope i helped in figuring out which trans you have.

Good Luck.

302's didnt have a c-6 for those years, only the 351. its got to be a aod or e4od.

yes, aod's were available for those years, but only with the 302. dads 90 302 has a aod.

most e4od's have the button on the end of the shifter stalk, mine does. but i think some early ones got it in the dash

If the guy can't tell the difference between an AOD and a E4OD, I sure as hell wouldnt let him touch my shit! Take it to a different shop, and do yourself a favor, why not try some of what we said. Kinda stupid to come on here and ask for advice, get a ton of good stuff, and then get raped by an idiot at a shop that doesnt care.

i learned something today.

i'm not exactly sure, but i'd put 5 bucks on it that the 87-91 generation with the E4OD (yeah, i know, they didn't come in 87, i'm just saying that generation) came with the button on the dash, while the 92-96 got it on the end of the shifter stalk.

the moved a lot of shit to the steering column parts between 91-92. beam selector switch moved from floor to turn signal stalk. wipers and washer buttong also moved to turn signal stalk, making it a multi-function switch. the OD Off button was moved to the shifter stalk. Ford was just cleaning up the dashboard.

i never said i wasnt gonna / didn't try any of the stuff as i said before the only reason i got a dignostic / estamate was because they were doing free diagnostics that ended on the 30th
